How do you keep your home defense shotgun?

I don't keep a round in the chamber, but it takes me longer to sit up in bed than rack a round into the chamber.

I keep the magazine full, but I'm not sure why. If something breaks through my front door, and two rounds of 00B at minimum range doesn't kill it... Well, I ain't firing a third, I'm diving out the window.

Maverick 88, 18.5" barrel, empty chamber, hammer down, safety off, three rounds of low-recoil tactical 00 in the mag, five round shotshell holder on the stock, fiteen round sling*

I keep the gun leaning against the wall between the bedframe and my nightstand. The girlfriend and I don't have any kids and our friends' children are never over so we're comfortable keeping guns in reach.

My back-up is the girlfriend and her .38

*The sling is there more for laughs than anything else. It takes my gun from being a humble Maverick 88 and turns it into the ZOMBIESMASHER 5000

Stock Mossberg 500 except the 18.5" barrel (with choke tubes). 5 in the tube, one sitting right next to it with the safty on. The first round to be chambered is birdshot, the next 4 and the one by the gun are 00 buckshot. Simple but effective 6 rounds of defense.

Bought a pickup truck rifle rack from a local gun shop, cut it in half, slipped a 6" strip of ¼" plywood under the bed between the box spring and the frame, screwed the rack to the plywood to support the barrel and stock, put the 870 in the rack with three #4 turkey shot and three 1oz. slugs.

It is easy to access by just reaching under the bed. No children to worry about. It is also off the floor and hidden by the bed skirt. Incidently, the Knoxx stock makes it easy for my wife to handle, very little recoil is felt no matter what I put in it.

Those Knoxx Copstocks are great! I have the folding one on my Mossberg 500AT. It's kept between bed and nightstand (which has the CZ97 in it). Chambered, saftey on. Loaded with 2 3/4" Federal magnum 00. Also has a Streamlight M3 mounted in front of the slide.

I've used this pic here before, but it's a good one of the gun:

Most of the time my HD shotgun is empty, and locked in the gun safe. I really like an AR or a .30 Carbine for HD use.
I do have a nice 870 with a Scattergun Tec 2 shot extention and a Remington factory 20 inch rifle sight barrel. If I do keep it by the bed, its loaded with 00 Buck, including the chamber, and the safety is on.
I have not loaded my Mossy 590 in years now.

Most of my home defense is against wily coyote. The 870 sits inside the bedroom closet with a tube full of #1 Buck 2 3/4" Federals. At inside the house range, that will do a number on anything it hits. It will also do a number on a coyote that is further away.

I have my 11-87 in the corner next to my bed. One in the pipe (#4 buck) with 4 in the magazine tube (#4, #4, 00,00), safety on. I always thought of having to rack a slide on a pump time consuming and if one isn't in the pipe, it lets an armed intruder know they need to shoot immediately, so I stick with my semi that is one safety suppression away from making the intruder FUBAR.

Right now I have an 11-87 on some Kydex hooks under the bed. The magazine is full with 7 rounds of PMC 9-pellet 00 Buck, with a round in the chamber and the safety on.

After realizing how easy Kydex is to work with, I was thinking about making a dustcover so I could leave the action open and the safety off. When I hit the bolt release, the dust cover would snap out of the gun.

I'm thinking about buying a wally world hunting gun for the house gun, just because the all black 11-87 with an extended magazine isn't very jury friendly.

More of a "tag" then anything but I have to say...

I disagree. That's one of my favorite T-Shirts! :neener:

For me, "Cruiser Ready", mag tube loaded with Hornady "00" buck TAP. Weapon is well concealed but easily accessible (and no, that doesn't mean its under the bed! ;) ).

Mixed Ammo

Forgive my ignorance, but whats the reasoning behind mixing slugs with 00B and #4 and 000B? Doesn't that get a bit confusing?

Red State,

Using #4 shot first will stop practically anything that enters your room but will not be as likely to penetrate walls and your aim may not be perfect if you are startled out of your sleep. But if the shot doesn't stop 'em then the slugs will. At least that's my opinion.

Fully loaded, ready to fire, safety on. Loaded with 00 and slugs in the carrier.
Hanging on pegs inside closet header.
Have a 95-lb GSD as Early Warning System / for Delaying Action.

i store mine with one in the chamber wit heh chamber half open and saftey off. all i have to do is grab the pup when i pick it up and it is ready to go. plus four in the tube ranges from how i feel that day eithr 9 pellet 00 or 7 1/2

if i mix it up you never know what to expect

At one time I kept my Remington Sportsman 12 Magnum (12 ga.) wrapped in an afghan (that's a woven blanket) at the foot of the bed. With a 21 inch deer barrel, rifle sights, cruiser ready... that is chamber empty, full magazine (4 rds 00 buckshot). I was living alone and would trigger lock it when I left the house. I used 2 3/4 inch shells though it will take 3 inch shells.

No folding stocks, no tac lights, just a plain jane shotgun that I hunted with.

I don't really mix them up, I just lead with two buckshot and follow up with slugs. Several of them... :)

Why? Because I can shoot thru a full refrigerator or anything in my house if someone has taken cover behind something substantial. Because I can shoot at a shallow angle thru sheetrock, three wall studs, and more sheetrock if I want to shoot at something that is around a corner.

I can't do that with an AR15 or a handgun.

And I'm a complete puss 'cuz I absolutely won't shoot any more 3" shells thru my pump.

the mossberg has five rounds of buck in the tube, empty chamber, safety on, hammer back. i don't want the slide moving unless i unlock it.

the nef is closed with a box of buckshot next to it, but it's not exactly a pump... :)

I bought one of the FN TPS guns CDNN has been selling lately. It's under the bed on the carpet, loaded with 7 x Winchester 2 3/4" 00 Buckshot, but not chambered. As for the "racking the slide sound" being ridiculous, I disagree. It make seem like a unnecessary movement but I want that bad guy to leave, not die on my new carpet. Do you have any idea what it costs to clean carpet stains these days? So yeah, I'll give him one last warning before I plug a hole in him.

Mossberg 500A,18.5" loaded with 2 #4
turkey loads followed by 3 rem reduced
recoil 00 buck. The chamber is empty
and the safety off.

My 870 is leaning up against the book case near my bed, cocked and locked with Federal 2 3/4" 00 buck (6 in the mag, 1 in the chamber).
