I figure that guns are tools. And to get good results, you take care of your tools, whether they be your guns, cordless drill, car, lawnmower, etc. I admit that I don't take care of my lawnmower as much as I should but I take care of the rest.

Basically I try to keep them clean and lubed. That means that I do this after I buy them and then after every time I go to the range. Not right away usually but within a day or two.

I don't know if I should wipe down the metal after handling all the time. I see the guys do this in the gun store. Any thoughts on wiping down your gun after handling?

Firearms need to be cleaned and oiled?
:D That is why I avoid pawn shops. Their used guns are always dry as a bone and FULL of black gunk. Their "sporting purpose" rifles have usually sat their for years and weren't rusty when they first came in the shop.

cleaned and oiled after every use, to varying degrees. I clean the moving parts of the SKS, but the bore refuses to get clean. Others are kept in like new condition. But all get at least somewhat cleaned and oiled after every range trip.

It all depends on the situation.

Corrosive ammo-ASAP
Non-corrosive in Mil-surp-That evening
Other collectible (Old Win., Trapdoor, etc.)-As soon as I get home
Sporting shotguns-As soon as I get home
Deer Rifle-First weekend of January
Duck gun #1 (SA 3 1/2")-After Season
Duck gun/boat paddle #2 (870)-Once every 2-3 years (maybe even less
frequently)

I always figured collectibles are for taking care of. Tools are for working. If they still work (reliably), I don't care what they look like. I also never oil hunting guns. Cold temps screw with oil too much. Rust (on the exterior) has never kept a deer or duck from hitting the ground or water.
