I was just thinking, and wondering how my preferences stack up to everyone else.
I know in stainless the bright polished stainless seems pretty popular, but I am definately not a big fan. It doesn't take much for it to show scratches and the look, while decent, is only OK to me.
In stainless I prefer a matte/satin finish. In addition to being probably the easiest finish to care for, I think it looks very good. Also, for a carry gun it is less flashy than the bright stainless so should your cover garment flash the gun a bit people are less likely to notice it.
In blues I like everything, but for different reasons.
For sheer cosmetic value I love a nice high polished blue. It is hard to maintain (just looking at it will cause fingerprints it seems), but it is beautiful. For a range or fun gun I love this finish and it may be my first choice (I hate it, at least when the finish is near perfect, for a "working gun" though as it is a shame when it starts to wear and it is also more flashy).
Still, I also value an older well worn blue. It tells me the gun has not been a safe queen and has seen the life a gun is supposed to have. I especially like it when guns I bought used with some wear start to show new wear since it is history with me, this also is the case for new guns if it has a more matte finish.
For a carry gun I like a matte blue. If your jacket opens up a bit this is probably the least noticable finish and the least likely to flash to others.
