I've been thinking about ordering a new 85ss all steel version and was wondering if the finish on the gun was the matt stainless or the high-gloss finish that some of the pictures of this model show. I don't like glossy and would prefer the matt finish. Also could anyone offer any experiences with this model?

If you go to the factory website, the models I've seen are matte. I bought a 605ss a few years back and it's matte finish. IMO new stock is matte. There might be some old inventory kicking around, so before you jump make sure you look.;) I like the matte finish.

The ultralites are matted. The all-steel are high gloss ...

They are a little bigger than a S&W J-frame but also fit my hand better and I actually prefer them better.

My 2" spurless 85 is kind of shiney, but not glossy brite. It looks good with it's wood grips. When I think of brite glossy stainless the Ruger Vaquero comes to mind. Need to wear shades on a sunny day with that one. For Mr. Fud. As to my experience with one; it has been all poitive. For its intended purpose of close in self defense, I can put 5 rapid fire 125+P shots in 15" square at 7 yards, dependable (no ftf in about 500 rounds), no breakage, and hides well. I carry and just occassionaly shoot +P. I mostly shoot 158gr swc reloads. Old 112
