How do you store your longarms?

Over the years I seem to have acquired an awful lot of firearms. Now I'm sure there are people here that have many more that me but thats neither here nor there. The question is, does anyone have any secrets for storing or "stashing" firearms?
I live in a suburb of NYC. I have a very small house and three kids. I don't shoot alot or hunt often lately. My basement is musty and I have had things rust or mold if I didn't pay attention.
I have three standup display type cases and I still have trap & skeet guns under the bed, pellet rifles leaning in corners of rooms, Rifles and or shotguns (cased) waiting to be cleaned and such.
Anyway I was thinking of burying some in a closet wall. Of course they would have to have relatively easy access. As long as its an interior wall there shouldn't be too much temperature/humidity change.
Anyone got any ideas?

Is there a second floor? If so, is the space under the staircase being used for anything? With limited construction abilities I was able to turn the dead space under my staircase into a closet. I'm sure it would work as "Gun closet" also.

I would imagine that a safe would be a great idea, there are some rather large ones out there. I'd give you some links, but I don't have any. And a safe seems vital if you have children. No matter how much you trust them, they can still have a lapse, and so can their friends.

Yeah maybe your right. Its just that the large ones are so well large and heavy. But I was thinking of two smaller ones.

I have three safes. Most of the long guns I slip into one of those tube sock like things made by Remington. Green. Will go over a scope. I slide one of those on and then I can really squeeze them together in a safe. The handguns go in Bore-Stores and then in the safe. Same thing, then I can stack them on top of each other and not worry about scratches.

I do have some open racks on walls with inexpensive C&R type long guns. The good stuff goes in safes. Bolted to the floor.

No, the rule of thumb is that a gunsafe will hold only 1/2 the number of longguns advertised by the manufacturer. Call it deceptive advertising and buyer beware.

When a gunsafe manufacturer says a particular model of safe will hold 28 longguns, what they really mean is that the safe will hold 28 .22cal unscoped semi-auto rifles with synthetic stocks. If your guns are bigger/bulkier than a .22 rifle, if your guns have scopes or bolt handles protuding, and/or if your guns have wood stocks and you're the least best concerned about their appearance, the number of guns you can get in that cabinet diminishes in a hurry.

one thing to watch out when your storing guns under a staircase. atleast my staircase in the old farm house. is store the guns with the barrel facing the floor. i usualy hang them in the gun rack by trigger gaurd, that way the barrel isnt holding up the weight. i do this because when you walk on the stairs, you can get dust and other debris to fall down the barrel. thats with a vertical gun rack. if your using a horziontal rack, you wont have that problem.

I have a 16 gun Stack-On safe. I currently have 15 guns in it and could fit one more w/o too much trouble. 4 of them have scopes. I have to be careful when removing guns not to scratch them and I have to remove some guns in front to get to some of the ones in the back.

I know of one guy who uses a large job box as his gun safe. About 1/3 the price of a good safe. No fire protection but pretty secure.

I keep my guns in a good safe. It is heavy, but then, I'm not in your area with the social climate you live in. I imagine that moving a safe in could very well be blood in the water to the sharks.
