Have two safes in a dry basement and we run a dehumidifier down there in the summer. Plus a Goldenrod in one of the safes. But as a little extra insurance I picked up a little unit called a humidity monitor . Gives you the temp and humidity and the daily high and low for each. Runs on a single "AA" battery. Occasionally move it from safe to safe and sometimes outside but near the safes to check each area around the safes. They are a nice unit that gives me a bit more peace of mind. It's called an "ACU>RITE" Humidity Monitor #00325W. Was $8.94 + tax at Wal-Mart. Have had it on the job since this past Jan. 5th, (checked my receipt; didn't realize it was that long ago already). It's real nice to be able to know the temperature/humidity of any enclosed area like a safe or the area right around the outside of the safe.

try a monitor

Thanks for the hygrometer info. My dehumidifier has a read out, but have no idea what it is inside safe.

I have some in versa racks on top shelf of safe and some hanging on coat hooks attached to door of safe. Have a de humidifier in gun room.

You guys are killing me with this -always something else to buy- stuff.:scrutiny: The order has been placed.

I'll only add something to NEVER do . . .

NEVER in a leather holster. Leather has internal moisture in it and will rust guns.

I used to store them in nylon gun cases so I could just grab and go to the range. I was buying Boyt's mostly. I gave up on that and am now switching to "Bore Stores". They are gun socks.

I heavily lube them up (oil is cheap, guns are expensive) and put them in the Bore Store and put it in the safe vertically.

Mostly my switch from cases to bore stores was due to space. Gun cases are bulky and are too exposed to the weather to bring back in and stick in the safe even with a golden rod and desiccant cans.

Oiled leather in a dry , humidity controlled safe? That never occurred to me.

Mine are all stored in the safe....I use a 20ga hull through the trigger guard to prop them up....it not only keeps most of the metal off the carpeted shelf but also allows more room.

Rifles and shotguns get an oil soaked patch draped over the barrel cradle since I've noticed the carpet soaks up oil from the metal....some of my firearms sit in the exact same spot for a full year (I wipe them down at least once a year, sometimes twice if I'm really bored).

Waveski,

My first centerfire (38 Diamondback) has been stored in the original leather and fleece case that I bought it in back in 76. It is well oiled leather and fleece and it has never had any finish issues other than use. If you run your finger over the fleece it comes back with a light sheen of oil which is why it works. I don't recommend it though as it is messy.
