I know someone who had his fingers in the path of the cylinder gap when firing a 38 spcl, he lost a good part of a couple fingers as a result. The surprising part of this, is he is very experienced and was doing some technical testing and managed to get his fingers in the way. The gases coming out between the gap are deadly and will slice through a finger, much like a hot knife does butter.
