How does Remington do it?? Curious...

Does anyone know anything about how Remington operates? Specifically I am curious about the Model 700. Seems quite often I see a gun in a store that I can not locate on their site (this time it is the 6.8 SPC Tactical). I suppose it is no longer made, so I wonder how many do they make for a production run? How do they decide "enough is enough"? (sales of course - but they seem to have ALOT of options come & go). How do they swap components (stocks, barrel types etc.) to have so many darn models - for many of their guns?

Just curious...
 
I live near the factory, listening to people that work there, it seems pretty much a mystery to everybody. I think quite a bit is how much contract work they have at a given time, since they've got that "assembled in Illion" rule, they sometimes have to stop making something to free up space for something else.
 
and sometime stuff winds up on the shelves that makes the folks at Illion go "Huh? how did THAT get out?".

back sometime around '96-'98 i was very seriously looking at a heavy barreled 700 in one of the stores in Raleigh NC. Rather resembled what is currently being sold as a Sendero SF II (HS precision stock, heavy profile fluted barrel), but parkerized like a 700P instead of stainless. And boy did i want that thing! being a poor college student at the time it took me awhile to scrape enough together to even THINK about seriously getting it, and by the time i got enough to make a lay-away, someone else had beat me to it.

In my search for another example i called up remington customer service and got three different people who all said, "Sir we don't HAVE a model like you're describing, are you SURE it was a remington?" followed by a 4th guy who was more informative with "Sorry to tell you sir but that was probably the only one you'll see this side of a custom shop order. i don't know exactly how it happened but, at this time that the combo of a Heavy profile, Fluted barrel, and a parkerized finish, is a custom option not offered on any of our production guns".

Well it's been ten years and i ain't seen one since, so i guess he was telling the truth.

as a side note i DID get to shoot it one day, the guy who beat me to it turned out to be a member of the same gun club as me.
 
I have a stainless 700 with a 5R barrel in a synthetic stock. I first saw one in the retail shop of a local shooting range. I talked to several shops about getting one and none of them seemed too interested in helping. After checking with their distributor and being told none were currently available, Vance's told me they could get me one eventually if I was willing to wait until Remington made another production run for a DoD contract. I ordered it in late February or Early March and got the gun in late August of the same year. According to Vance's, the guns available to the public were overruns in production against a DoD contract. This gun is similar to an SSPS in appearance (right nomenclature?) but with a 5R barrel and I have never seen it on Remington's site or in any catalog.
 
I once saw a Remington XR-100 Rangemaster chambered in .308 at Gander Mtn. Then and now, it's only available in varmint calibers. It was new, not used.
 
they also make guns that are distributor specific. Say Lew horton or Davidsons decides that they want to buy say 250 Model 7's with a 20 inch barrel, mannlicher stock and say chambered for 6.5 carcano, Remington will make that run, it will never show up in a catalog, it will not show up on the web page. But there they are at the local gun shot. I have bought Winchesters, Remingtons, S&W's and Rugers that never show up in the catalog but only on some distributors broadsheets.

Its all business, and they love to make new and different things but htey love it more when someone else takes the risk, lets say we decided to do a group buy on something odd, like say a 700 with a 28 inch heavy barrel stainless fluted on a blued action, with a grey kevlar stock, chambered for 257 AI roberts. Now, provided we had an FFL who acted for us, and we had fronted enough cash to the FFL to keep their attention, we could get that combination made.


Buy the way, that 6.8 spc tactical, has the part number #rem27503 and its from Davidsons.

and if you want the sweetest S&W ever the 8 shot registered magnum in deep blue, is #S&W170271FC for the 3 1/2 inch and #S&W170272FC for the five inch, from hortons.
 
My Tactical is 27505. I saw a couple on different sites (gunsamerica & another) - but no other "more formal" information.

The more I handle it the more I love it. Decent mid-range round, handy length, and it is MUCH lighter then my 700 VS "sniper" - and I am trying to keep it that way. I have a Leupold Mark 2 on the way for it.
 
I remember when the LSS came out I wanted one realy bad but didnt
have the funds, Kicked my self all the time for not trading something off.
Then recently I spotted one in the rack at the local store My eyes were drawn to it within seconds of reaching the counter (You all know how it is)

Anyway I asked how did you get that, the guy said "they made a special
run of them"
I told the guy to set it aside and that Id be right back,
I ran home and grabed a new 700 in the same caliber (purchased specificaly for this moment in time) and traded it!!

And now I finally have Model 700 LSS .300 win mag (laminated stock Stainless) (pepper color stock very sweet)
 
chain stores

Most of the Remingtons that you see that are not in their catalogue were special orders for the big chain stores. Remington still makes 700 ADLs for Wal-mart even though the model was supposedly replaced by the SPS. Dicks is currently selling a model 700 in .223 with varmint barrel and o.d. green stock. Its a Dicks exclusive.
 
I heard from someone a while back that the Remington 870 Express HD variant with synthetic stock and extended magazine was originally a model intended for a chain store (Big 5, Dick's, or similar), but eventually found it's way into the general catalog.

No idea if that's true or not, but I suppose it could be in the realm of possibility.

it's the 700 SPS-V (with as you note the Dick's Exclusive O.D. stock), saw one over the summer, in raleigh NC, while visiting my parents.

if i decide to break form for my next centerfire rifle and get a remington instead of a savage, which would be a first in a decade, i'll likely wind up having my father pick one of those up, since I don't have a Dick's near me and i like the OD stock better than the black.
