How does your state rate according to the Brady Bunch and why do they lie like that?

Reformat of an e-mail sent to these clowns:

Oregon gun laws again received a C- because it does a mediocre job of protecting children from gun violence.

Which is of course why you gave us two marks of A- for juvenile possession and transfer laws.

Gun violence in the state could increase because the federal assault weapon ban will expire this year if Congress does not reauthorize it and Oregon has no state law restricting assault weapons or high-capacity ammunition magazines.

Yep, though we can buy and possess all of the pre-and-post ban rifles and mags we want, we are just waiting for September 14, 2004 to roll around before the great "assault weapon" shootout in the streets of Oregon. Nice to see you folks doing your part to keep adult diapers on the shelves.

Oregon does not hold adults responsible for leaving loaded guns around children, does not require child-safety locks to be sold with guns, and does not have any handgun safety standards. Oregon also forces police to let people carry hidden handguns in public, including Oregon schools.

Then where'd our past "F" go?

On a positive note, Oregon does regulate the sale or possession of guns by kids and does require background checks at gun shows.

Ah yes, the feel good and ineffectual measures passed post Columbine. Hadn't noticed them stopping any private transactions that weren't at gun shows.

In 2001, the most recent year for which data is available, 17 children and teenagers in Oregon died from gunfire. Oregon can improve its grade next year by banning assault weapons, requiring child-safety locks to be sold with guns to prevent unintentional shooting, holding adults responsible if they leave loaded guns around children and allowing school districts to ban hidden guns. Unfortunately, 31 states received grades of D or F in this year’s report card.

While children dying from any reason is regrettable, since none of that proposed legislation is going to happen, can we please have our "F" back? An F from you certainly stands for "Freedom." Letting you handwringers have your way would be the only "Failure."

Sincerely--well not really.

I honestly think they are skewing the results to their favor in many cases to make it look like they are actually making some kind of progress. They dont even consider which states are "class 3" or not. I would think in their minds the ability to own real life "assault weapons" (i.e. machine guns) would have a significant impact on how a state rates. Of course then they would have to admit they are misleading people into thinking that these "assault weapons" they are banning are real life machineguns when in truth they arent. We really need to work harder on dispelling that particular myth. Damn near 80-90% of the antis i talk to think that semi-auto = machinegun.

Ohhh why did I go and open their dadburn website. These fools make me so mad. Too early in the morning to get angry.

"I'm so pretty...oh so pretty..."

Indiana Receives Grade of D-
State Awarded “Sensible Safety Star†for New Legislation

Indiana gun laws again received a D- because its laws are among the worst in the country at protecting children from gun violence. But Indiana was awarded a “Sensible Safety Star†for good conduct for enacting a law that prohibited domestic violence abusers from possessing a firearm.

Indiana does not require child-safety locks to be sold with guns; does not hold adults accountable for allowing children to access firearms; and has no safety standards for handguns. Furthermore it forces police to let people carry concealed handguns in public, allows teenagers to carry hidden handguns and does not require background checks at gun shows. On a positive note, Indiana does regulate the sale of guns to kids. In 2001, the most recent year for which data is available, 59 children and teenagers in Indiana died from gunfire.

I'm not as pleased as I would be if we'd received an F or F-, but I can live with the D- :D

Oh, and they give us an F- on our concealed carry law.
:neener:

This is pretty funny. They don't even do a decent job editing their own reports. From the South Carolina report card:

South Carolina gun laws again received a C- because it does a mediocre job of protecting children from gun violence. Gun violence in the state could increase because the federal assault weapon ban will expire this year if Congress does not reauthorize it and Rhode Island has no state law restricting assault weapons or high-capacity ammunition magazines.
*emphasis added*

Um...OK...we know what you mean, I think, and I know it's hard to think straight when you're foaming at the mouth over South Carolina's relative respect for the Second Amendment.

Then, there's logical inconsistency:

the state...does block gun traffickers by limiting handgun purchases to no more than one per month.
South Carolina's weak laws also create devastating consequences outside its borders. According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (BATF), South Carolina is a significant supplier of crime guns to other regions in the nation.

Is there some huge criminal demand for deer rifles that I don't know about?

We're a C-. :( Too many restrictions, so it's understandable. Let's work on unlimited handguns so we can get that failing grade! :D

Hi , West "God Damn"Virginia got a D !!!!!! How come those brady people are never riding bikes in Ca. Mt lion country ! Bet they throw a gun -lock safety device at it ! SHEEPLE deserve to be slaughtered, it's there own GD fault !..............WVleo

Kansas got a C+, that's sad. I was hoping for at least an F or a D.
The local NBC affiliate brodcast the rating on the six o'clock news, I e-mailed them, said that having the Brady Campaign rate your state on gun safety was like having the KKK rate your state on racial equality.

Darn! North Dakota only got a D! Guess we have to try harder next year!:p :D

It's pretty obvious that the Brady Bunch is making up statistics for their reports. I went to our Attorney General's website and pulled up the homicide report from 2001 (the year quoted on the Brady report). Brady reported 2 children died, but our AG says the youngest victim was a 19 y.o. man shot with his father on a remote road. Maybe it could have been prevented with CWP?

Michigan received a D+. I think the reason that the Brady folks came out with a grading system is to skew information on the correlation of gun rights and crime. Look at some of the urban areas with the most stringent gun laws and how high the violent cime rate is. The Dept. of Justice compiles data in their annual Crime and Statistics journal. Cities like Chicago, Washington D.C., etc. have very strict gun laws, but very high crime rates. It is nothing more than a publicity campaign for their political cause. A lot of non-gun owners will read this information and will be influenced in their judgment without checking into the facts. If the Brady crowd is really crusading for a safer society, then they need to focus their attention as to the roots of crime and what works as a deterrent.

I guess I'm surprised that AZ got as high as a 'D'. But it does give us room to improve for our 'F' next year.:neener:

From the report...
...Arizona also forces police to let people carry hidden handguns in public and does not require background checks at gun shows....
That these Brady people are so comfortable in their insanity puzzles me. Their view is that our CCW law forces police to let citizens do what we're lawfully doing. All power comes from the State. Amazing. And they're still persisting in the fiction that arms dealers at gunshows do not accomplish the same background checks that they do in their brick&mortar operations.

Man, Alabama rates an F! Wow.. what a surprise. We are behind on a lot of issues compared to other states (we are working hard on that), but I'd like to say that this is one scale that I'm glad we fit at the bottom of the barrel on.

We got a Sensible Safety Star for good conduct! So very first grade

Luckily there's room for improvement! Just start registering shotguns/rifles (!); enact ballistic fingerprinting and watch that A- shoot up to an A!

There's a special place in hell.... :fire:

I am really disappointed now... Up here in the "Live Free or Die" State of New Hampshire, we only got a D-

Next year we can work for an F

Pat

These people are pretty lazy. It looks like they basically wrote a half dozen paragraphs and just cut and pasted the name of the state into them. Heaven forbid they should actually have to write a 50 tiny little statements for their oh so important annual report card. It probably took us all longer to read the things than it took them to write them.

We got an F in Wyoming, but we blew straight F's by getting a D- for "Concealed Carry Weapons Law." I guess we're going to have to work on that one.

Why not look it up? Bandwidth costs money, and the more they have to spend paying their ISP, the less they have to harass us with.

I think all of us should download everything on their site at least ten times a day. :D

Anyway, here's Colorado's grade:

7TH ANNUAL REPORT CARD – KEEPING KIDS SAFE FROM GUN VIOLENCE
Colorado Receives Grade of D
State Placed in “Time-Out Chair†For Dangerous New Legislation

i love how concealed carry laws are so "dangerous"
watchout man, that guy might have a gun in his waistband and it could jump out and shoot you!
spare me
at least GA got a D!
im going to do my best to see we get an F next year!
heres to pissing off sarah and her minions!
 :neener: :fire:
BSR

oh yeah, and it just occurred to me to email the brady bunch and thank them for complimenting GA by giving us a D, but they dont have an e-mail address except for "website issues"
i guess they got tired of hearing about how mean they are
BSR

From the (w)hore-ses mouth (Brady.org):

Ohio gun laws again received a D+ but the state’s already poor grade will drop further next year if the
new concealed handgun bill becomes law.

:D :D

New York got a B+

We got a B+ in NY state. Honestly I actually thought we could have done better than that. The gun culture west of the Hudson is as pronounced as any other rural state.

On a side note it was a good thing that we got a B+...it shows how awful the Brady Bunch lies. We had about 150 murders in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th largest cities of NY (Buffalo and Rochester had 60 and 57 and Syracuse had around 15) almost all drug related with people under the age of 25 but they didn't bother including those numbers in their fanciful children statistics because we already have "tough gun laws to protect children"
