I would imagine you would be the limiting factor not the rifle. I don't think 600 yards is out of the question, although you may be loosing quite a lot of ballistics by then.

IIRC, effective range for a .223 is around 400yds for man-sized targets. How far you can reliably hit targets depends on your skill, eyesight, rests, sights/optics, etc.

To shoot your rifle any distance would take a big gun...

What distance can you hit a target with an AR is up to you.
Factors are;
The sight system your have on it
your eyesight
The ammo you are using
and what is your target.

Marines qualify at 500 meters

Specialized AR15s are even used to compete out to 1,000yds. However, I'd say that 600yds is close to the practical limit for most ARs shooting at silhouette sized targets or NRA bullseyes.

If you haven't done much shooting past 100yds before, I would try 200yds and 300yds first. You will want to be good out to 300 before you start trying beyond that since wind and drop pick up considerably past 300,

i shoot prairie dogs w/ my very ordinary, run-of-the-mill 18" ar at over 600 yards...

as mentioned, it is almost always the shooter that is the limiting factor. most rifles are accurate far beyond the shooter.

As was mentioned, with the .223, the wind becomes a real big issue out past about 300-400 yards. That doesn't mean that you can't shoot past that, but you are going to have to take wind into account.
I think that rifle you are talking about is a Bushmaster. Bushmasters usually have a 1:9 twist barrel. For long range shooting you are going to want to be using the heaviest bullet you can. The 1:9 twist is going to probably prevent you from using the real heavy bullets. Run of the mill .223 is usually 55 or 62 grain. Both will work fine with a 1:9 barrel.

Yeah, that's a Bushmaster. For what it's worth, this sound like an M4-type rifle, so it's probably not going to have the same range as a full-size (20" or greater barrel) AR-15. Of course, your skill is still definitely the limiting factor.

i think the real question is 'would you stand in the line of fire at 1000 yards with someone pointing my 14.5" xm15e2s?' if the answer is no, then you've answered your own question.

With an M4 and an ACOG, I can hit IPSC human silhouettes about 70% at 600 yards. It isn't a pretty group, but the steel dings when hit. No doubt more accomplished shooters could push the distance.

The fun part is trying to see if you can get off 2 or more shots that hit and no longer be firing when the report of the dings on the steel finally make it back. I have done 2. I can't ever seem to either be fast enough to get three hits on the target before the report of the first comes back or accurate enought to get all three to hit before the report of the first hit returns.

I have a stock Bushmaster M4 style rifle with a 4x12 scope on it, and I can ding a steel ram (about life size) pretty well at 440 yds from the bench. That's the longest our range has to offer.

I usually shoot it at 50 to 300 yds at paper and steel silhouettes or gongs.

Once I get the rifle dialed in for a given distance, it is pretty accurate and consistent at all of those ranges. I am a non-competing plinker.

My advice: Take lots of ammo and have a lot of fun. That's what I do.
