How fast is a Benelli?

I hear a lot of guys talking about how much faster the inertial action is than other semi-autos. Has anyone put a timer on one to see how fast they actually are?

For comparison, I ran my Remington Model 11 (Auto-5, for all intents and purposes) and 1100 the other day, to see how fast they were. Both were getting splits of .19 sec.

Not fast enough to matter at all. I think the new Winchesters are faster. But who cares?

Where I live, I get 3 shots for hunting anything. Birds, waterfowl, deer, whatever.

Buy a Benelli if you like it, but not because you think it's faster.

Occasionally for fits and shiggles and to impress my shooting buddies, I'll dump 6 slugs down range out of my m1 super 90. The last one will be out of the tube before the first one hits the target 100 yrds away... as fast as you can pull the trigger. I thought this was a neat trick, until one day one of my buddies did the same thing with a Winchester M97...

I think that the slowest semiauto will cycle as fast as anyone can actually hit anything with it.

For pure cycle time, the Benellis are fast. But if you are trying to pull .12 seconds between shots chances are you are good enough to know if it matters.

Benelli used to hype that the Super-90 would dump 8 shells before the first empty hit the floor. I haven't managed to do it yet after all these years, but it's sure been fun trying... ;)

The Benelli should be faster, as there is a lot less mechanism moving than on a gas gun and a whoooole lot less than on the long-recoil guns.

Have a M-121. Faster than I can shoot accurately. Surprised I've never seen mention of the 121's anywhere around here. Very nice shotgun that serves multiple purposes. Split personalities are better when found in shotguns than women. :)

I'm with ArmedBear on this. I assume an A5 cycles slower than an AL 391. That being said... I don't believe it noticeably effects the ability to get back on a bird.

I don't think it matters much either, but I just wanted the numbers. Tom Knapp and company talk all sorts of stuff about "can your gun shoot that fast?"

I was just curious if mine could, but not quite curious enough to drop a grand on a Benelli to do the comparison.

So, does anyone actually have a timer and a benelli?

I have two benelli m1s90 (standard and GS models).

Their actions are VERY very fast.

However, for myself the benefit of a Benelli isn't the speed of cycling - it is its superb ease of cleaning. There are VERY few parts in a benelli that you have to worry about. I wipe the bolt face off with a qtip from the ejection port, then put an otis shotgun patch holder through the bore four times. unscrew the choke, swab the threads, replace.

DONE.

The time difference between a Benelli and a gas gun like the Remington 1100, Win SX2 or Browning Gold is around than 0.03 seconds. Yes that is .03 seconds.

I have owned and shot all three of the above in IPSC, where speed matters.

For me the biggest plus of the Benelli is its light weight which makes for a faster swinging gun. Not primo for skeet of trap, but good for hunting or the action games.

And they are easy to maintain. Not a lot of stuff to clean or break for that matter.

My old M1 below. These days it is an M2 set up just like its older brother only with a Nordic tube instead of the DMW one pictured.

I still shoot a Browning Gold Fusion for the Sportsmans Team Challenge.

In fact, Tim used to be an exhibition shooter for Beretta:

Which proves that you can't take these sponsored players advice to heart. They are paid to say each is the best. Tim contradicts himself many times between the Beretta video and the Benelli. The only thing that changes was who was writing his paycheck.

I've played for multiple sponsored paintball teams in the past. Whoever pays the bills gets the nod.

Most any quality, well taken care of shotgun will do the same as any other.

I remember a report on shotguns for IPSC, and the guy reported the 1100 at .14 seconds, benelli at .13, and the auto-5 at .12. If you're hiting at .19, it's not really going to matter, although the report said the benelli had a more serious problem when it's outrun, in that the trigger becomes unset, and the action has to be cycled. I can't seem to find it though.

The Brian Enos forums will have a slew of information on the speeds though.

I seem to remember seeing an oscilloscope trace test where the Win SX2 & Browning Gold both cycled faster then a Benelli, but I don't know where I saw it.

As for that, my old A-5 Browning cycles faster then I can get back on a bird I miss, so for me at least, it's plenty fast enough.

Well...

They're a lot faster to shoot empty than they are to reload.

I used to run around with a couple of folks who instructed at one of the classified ranges (it was then, anyway) on Ft. Bragg. They used both M1S90s and 870s for the shotgun part of the POI. Everybody used to complain about how long it took to 'cold start' a Benelli :D.

That didn't even change.

Beretta owns Benelli, Uberti, Stoeger, and Franchi, AFAIK.

Like all automatic shotguns, it is faster than you can shoot accurately.

But for the record, I believe the SX3 is the fastest. Like by a kajillionth of a second.

I have emptied my Mossberg 930SPX (8-shots) in under 2 seconds, I have NO IDEA how these pros can do 12 shots in under 1.5 seconds!!

To do 8-shots in less than 2 (and keeping the shots going down range in a safe direction) it is as fast as I can pull the trigger, I'm definitely not "waiting" for the gun to catch up with me, I'm sure in the right hands the gun could be much faster.....but why???

There is no realistic scenario (aside form the immanent zombie apocolypse) that I would ever need to shoot at anything that fast.

It is a lot of fun trying though!!! :D

Why should it matter unless you're an exhibition shooter?

Years ago I hunted a few times with a guy who would empty all three shots from his auto at every grouse that flushed and never hit anything. Putting lots of shot in the air quickly is not a substitute for good shooting.

IMO every beginning hunter should be encouraged to start with a single-shot or just load one shell in their repeater until they learn to make that first shot count.

Thats what I had to do. Used a mossberg pump with one shot, then two. Now I bought a berreta and have 3, but often times that 3rd shot is a waste.
