How Hard is Delinking Belted .308???

I think it would be way cool to get some belted .308, however....how much of a PITA is it to unlink the rounds for use? Is it worth it? Please let us know out there, as I was thinking of adding a can to my port case order! Would be nice to have an extra can, too!

Biff is right -- it's pretty easy to get apart. A friend of mine once gave me an old belt to play with. Kinda rough on the fingers though.

very hard on the fingers...and i was using a wooden dowel to help push...


it is really cool to have a belt of 7.62x51mm hung up. i left about 200 rounds linked up for show...that's my story and i'm sticking with it, just ignore my bloody fingers:banghead:

I like the M60 method. Easier on the fingers and way too much fun doing it.

No real problem - - -

I use a block of wood - -Piece of plain, unfinished 2 x 4 - - to press the bullets against and pop the ctgs out of the link. Pair of gloves makes it easier on my hands, but not actually required.

I've had good results with the accuracy of the Radway Green ammo, and another waterproof ammo box is always nice to have. That said, if you intend to use the ammo mainly for high-powered plinking, you might be able to find mil .308 ammo for a little less money. Certainly, though, a linked belt can be a pretty neat decor item.

Save the links, too--Some class 3 shooter would be glad to get 'em, some day.

yup, someday...i've got about 1k links sitting in a paper bag in the garage.

a linked belt offers a great photo opt too...it also gives you a better apreciation for how much weight a m-60 gunner lugs around

I have de-linked 3 cans using the following method, which I got from AK-47.net. Its pretty fast.

1. Lay the link out next to the can.

2. Find an appropriate de-linking "whacker". See below after I describe the process.

3. Hold the first two rounds with points up, perpendicular to the edge of the can, with edge of the can between rounds 1 and two. So the bottom of the case, and the primer, are below the edge of the can, and the link is resting on the edge of the can.

4. Whack the bullet end of the end cartridge. It'll pop right out of the link and lay on the floor next to the can. The links will separate.

5. Move the belt to the next cartridge, and whack again.

It moves pretty fast. Don't worry about re-seating the bullets. The military crimp and brass are plenty strong for this treatment. Many AK-47.net users recommend this, and report no problems.

The appropriate whacking tool is narrow enough that it won't hit more than one point at a time, heavy enough to whack the round out with a single whack, and "soft" enough to soothe your fears over re-seating the bullets. I use an onld screwdriver, whacking with the hande-end. As a bonus, this treatment has given the screwdriver handle a tatcial stippled finish that improves grip
