How is your small game hunting going?

As fall approaches and not being a deer hunter, my mind turns to small game and birds. Dove hunting for me was a bust because I did not get to go to NW Kansas where I usually overheat the barrel and my local spots here in NE Kansas were not productive....at all. Squirrel outings have been mixed. First time out there were squirrels everywhere and I killed my limit easily; could have doubled it. Yesterday, I hosted my nephew in the same woods and we only shot one. The weather was warm (75 degrees) and windy; not good squirreling weather. Just curious how everyone is doing out there. I'll hit the squirrel woods again this weekend and will let you know how it goes. Have been shooting my Remington 541S .22LR, but will switch to my Ruger 17HMR now that most leaves are gone and I can see much greater distances.

Went out three times this year and it hasn't been great but not horrible either. Eight squirrels and two rabbits between the three times. Archery deer just opened so I will be spending most of my hunting time doing that for the next three months.

Went out a few times this year. Dove hunting was a bust and only got two. It went a little bit better while I was scouting my elk hunting area and I got four grouse over the course of two days. During Thanksgiving break (I am a teacher) I am going to go out for pheasant and rabbit

I shot limits on doves in Waco, none in my county. Where'd they go? They're always late here.

I haven't gotten to go squirrel hunting, yet. I can't wait to get out and do it, though, after we close on the house. I have thick oak woods back of the house and will own a few acres of it. Prolly some native pecans back there, too, haven't explored it all in detail, yet, just walked the property line once. I will be chasin' 'em, though, for sure. :D

McGunner, sounds like a really great place. Pecan trees would definitley be a bonus!

Here in Ohio, hard mast production has been very high in recent years and the squirrel population reflects it. Central and southeast parts of the state are very active with greys, fox, and reds. Cottontail populations on the other hand have decreased significantly, might have something to do with the steady increase in coyote among other things.

small game

I live in mo its been ok nothing spectacular yet deer season is close though.:D

Shot limits (5) daily on squirrel in Flagstaff, AZ. Didn't get a chance to get out in the desert for quail. Fall dove coming up soon though

I have managed to knock down a few doves this year & kill a few squirrel, has not been cold enough for me to go blast the cotton tails yet, getting ready right now for white-tail in about three weeks...............

Been out deer hunting a couple of times, but I haven't gone small game hunting yet. I always like to wait until it gets cooler, particularly after the first frost. I plan on taking my first squirrel trip when I get off work in the morning. Hopefully I'll get a couple. Definitely looking forward to some squirrel.

Dove hunting in my area was great the first 2-3 weeks of the Texas central zone; but immediately after a good rain, there were virtually no doves to been seen. Rains were good....but, dove hunting dried up!!
