Squirrel hunters?

I knew the difference in squirrels when I started hunting them...... when I was in 5th grade.

Could see some folks not knowing the diff, if they don't have all 3 in their neck of the woods.

But I would think those who hunt, or just like nature, to do a bit of research somewhere along the road.

Wolf River Bottoms
Near Memphis.

I hunted squirrel there as a teen.

More often, closer to Bartlett. There was way more woods there then ('62, '64),
and I didn't get arrested for walking down the main street with my 16 or 22.

Then, evolution happened ..

Been there. Done that. Enjoyed it !

Took my J.C. Higginns .22 near Jackson and Orchi. Good swimming hole there and one off Wells Station Rd.
Later went plinking with my Ruger Single Six between Summer and Macon a little west of Bartlett.:)

GM, thanks for the nostalgia.

Here's a pic of two of my high school hunting buddies in the back of my '48 jeep pickup that my dad and I (mostly dad; I mostly fetched parts and tools) built out of two junker trucks. This was shot in the Wolf River bottoms between Raleigh and Summer Ave in squirrel season, circa '67, after the Corp of Engineers had their way with channelization. Note the mud.

The Good Ole Days

Yes, "Those were the days my friend! We thought they'd never end...."
As the song says. That is not the same area now. "Progress" is not always progress.

Thanks for the picture. Smiles can carry you for miles.:)

After shooting two one hole groups at 25 yards with my 10-22 a bit ago using CCI Standard Velocity which I'd never tried in it, I'm pretty happy with my 10-22 as a squirrel slayer. I mean, ain't like I didn't kill my share with CCI Mini Mag, but it only shoots 3/4" at 25 yards. I'd never tested the gun with other than Mini Mag and Federal bulk. During this .22 shortage, I've just bought what I could get, so I have variety to test with, now. :D

Anyway, since I got my buck with my crossbow yesterday and since deer gun season hasn't opened yet, I think I'll go look for squirrel in the woods this afternoon. I have a new found appreciation for my 10-22 now. :D

Sat out under a tree in the back this afternoon from 4 to 6. Shot one fox squirrel. Heard a few others chattering around, but didn't bother trying to sneak up on 'em. I tried using the squirrel call I bought a while back. Don't know if I have any faith in that, kinda funky sound.

I've often thought that what squirrels here when we use those calls is what we humans here when Stephen Hawking speaks through his digital voice: a poor mimic. Real animal voices have nuances, tones and harmonics that can't be imitated by technology, especially the stuff that we can afford.

I often use a kissing sound while using my hand as a horn to direct the sound. I am no where near as good as Gramps was.

Also, if you can hawk whistle, they will often stop running and look a second giving you a second shot. It usually only works once.

I've tried the Quaker Boy push type and the metal button whistle(I don't know the maker) and nether seems to work.

I struck out this year, both outings were doomed with vehicle failure :

1st a new logging road slid out from underneath my truck (dang sand). 2nd alternator belt blew and took out power steering pump and belt !

Currently stalking some turkey... May your tree rat season end with Fricasse !

Largest Squirrel ?

Maybe someone who has the qualifications in breeding, animal husbandry, genetics, etc., could crossbred squirrels and capybara, and we could bring home a water tree hog for dinner?

Don't know if he'd mostly live in the trees or water, but would guess the latter. If so, maybe you could get him with a harpoon, bow and arrow, speargun (or whatever), just get the bred ready first). We'll take care of the rest.:D

SOB, how do you like that Ruger American? What barrel length? Is the convertible stock option useful for you?
I love it. I've only had it for a few weeks and it's made quite a bit of meat so far. The barrel is 18" and the convertible stock makes sense. Helps get my head up where the scope needs it to be. The only issues I've had with it so far have been my fault. Don't baby the bolt and you'll be good to go.

Took a couple more fox squirrels with it today...
