how long does it take to get a gun permet and the permit to allow you to carry a gun on you in a holster

Yep, depends on your state/county. Here in Pa, it,s, give the man your twenty, fill out our form, wait twenty minutes and you are on your way with your permit.

In FLA it took me 14 days door to door. But that didn't include the passport photo, digital fingerprinting and training class (I had my DD214 so I didn't need to go). The whole thing was $117 for 5 years.

here in OK there is between 3weeks to 3 months once you send in the application, depending on the departments load, sometimes they get it done quick, and sometimes it takes them a while.

I'd get the application done and send it off as quickly as possible.

Glassman, they have up to 45 days to issue, but the fee is twenty five dollars, used to be 19 but they just raised it. You might want to look into that.

Most counties don't f with you and process you right there.

TX: No permit to purchase. CHL requires a class; all in all, the process is like 60 days between getting a class scheduled, completing it, sending in your completed application, and recieving your CHL.

In OK walk in to the gunstore. Buy what you want walk out. As many and as often as you want.

For a concealed carry permit the state has 90 days to issue or show cause why not. It took a bit less than a month to get mine.

SC - No permit to purchase, takes about 45 minutes to fill out the paperwork and for the merchant to call in a SLED check.

CWP permit requires 8 hours in class session with written test and qualifying. Takes about 90 days to get your permit after you mail in your app and requirements.

Need State, Cinder

Dude.

The rules change depending on where you live.

I live in Nevada. No waiting period, no special permits, no paperwork to carry in a holster. Nevada is an "open carry" state. There's a stupid blue card if you live in Las Vegas, but open carry is still okay.

Help us out, Cinder, tell us something of your circumstances. Make sure you include city and state. Mostly, a state's rules are good for the whole state, but we have some states with weird city rules (Illinois comes to mind, and Ohio used to be that way).

We be happy to help, but we need to know more.

I'm sure someone here will chime in soon but in the mean time, go to packing.org

Everything you need to know about the various states permits and great info on reciprocity too.

Ahh, New York

Okay, assuming New York City, then, what do we have for him, Johnny?

All you New Yorkers out there?

I got mine in about 35 days when I lived up in New York. Unrestricted.

Hey New yorker here, Broom county area
In my neck of the woods the wait on the form says 5-6 months but i have known people who have gotten responses in as little as 3.
Hope this was helpful

Cinder, please provide us with the name of your county. I am in Cayuga county and once the police had the FBI background check and the questionaires from my references in their hands, there was three weeks of waiting while everything made it's way to the county clerk and then the judge and then the clerk again and then to arrive in the mail.
Some counties purposefully make you wait, but not mine.

I got my NY permit in 2003 in Fulton County. It took 3 1/2 months. I submitted my application in October and received my permit in January.

For those unfamiliar with the NY permit process there is good information here: http://www.ocshooters.com/Hand/plgeneral.html

In NY the speed depends on the many factors. The main ones are listed below in descending order of impact.

-County of residence: This is the biggie. Some counties can take up to a year, others move you right through.

-Issuing Judge: Even in the same county the Judges can differ widely on how they feel about issuing permits so they might not make much time available to process them. Their case load will also have an impact on their availability. At least in Fulton County the Judges required you to meet with them one on one to discuss the permit and their restrictions and conditions.

-Availability of Training Course: You will have to attend a firearm safety training course. This will probably not involve shooting a firearm. In Fulton County the only acceptable course was was a four hour class taught once a month by the Sheriff Dept. In my case this was the major delay. I submitted my application too late to get approved for the October class and since only one officer taught the course and he was sick in November and on vacation in December I had to wait until January for the next session. My friend submitted his application a week before me and got into the October class. He had his permit 6 weeks after he applied.

-Speed of Reference Return: In NY you need to give four character references who live in your county and are not relatives. They will be sent a questionnaire they have to compete and return. Your permit will not move forward until they are all back so you need to make sure they send them in as soon as possible after receiving them.

Good luck.

Even this is county dependent. In Monroe county two could be relatives, but could not live in the same household.
