To go along with Kestrels thread about the GI thumb safety. How many of you 1911 toters cary a box stock Colt Gov't Model, SA Mil-Spec or GI , or whatever other 1911 that has the GI thumb and grip safeties?

I have and carry a nrm, stainless 1991A1. Theonly thing that has been changed is the rear sight, to a Yost retro rear.

I am one of those poor souls!! :) I carry a WW2 Springfield GI . Only thing different is the recoil spring and sights. My eyes can't see those military sights as good as I used to. Oh my Springer also sports a set of Hoage grips.

Two of my favorite carry pistols (only mods are sights) are an old Colt's Combat Commander (Novaks) and a parkerized SA Mil-Spec (King's "Hardball" sights)

Carry

Me...A rotation of 3 different guns...All with standard GI appendages, right down to the little half-pad thumb safety.

A GI Mil-Spec Springer...upgraded with USGI and/or real steel steel aftermarket parts.

A LW Commander...ditto

A rebuilt WW2 USGI Colt with a retrofit Kart barrel

Long smooth faced steel triggers...Genuine WW1 one-piece in the Colt...two-piece Colt WW1 repro in the others. Flat, checkered Smith & Alexander mainspring housings with lanyard loop. 7-round magazines. Hardball or Winchester 230-grain hollowpoint...Occasionally Ranger Talons.

I carry a Stainless NRM govt. model. The only changes were Novak sights and decent wooden grips to replace the crappy, cheap, useless, rubber ones that come on the handgun.

My Systema with a no-name slide. It has no marking except the Serial number

Springer milspec.

But it's only going to be stock until I get enough time to install the beavertail and flat MSH. :D

All the time. In fact only two of my 1911s have any customizing at all done to them.

I much prefer the GI-pattern thumb safety. It falls readily to hand when I need to engage or disengage it, but it doesn't have any extra length or width to catch on holster or clothing. Being right-handed, I also do not use an ambidextrous thumb safety.

Not me, I get hammer bite/safety bite something terrible with a stock grip safety. As part of my high grip I also ride the thumb safety, so I replace it with something between the carrier deck super wides and the stock width. The Ed Brown 'tactical' safety is one I am fond of.

The last couple NRM Colts I bought have been absolutely ready to go right out of the box for someone with a lower grip and/or less meat on their hands.

I also do my own smithing, so availibility and cost of modification is much easier to deal with.

You know, the stock rubber grips, with grip tape on the front strap, give me one hell of a grip on the gun.

1991a1 Colt. Wilson Trigger, Bo-mar adjustable sights, and Cocobolo grips.
Those are the only non stock parts to it. Carry it all the time.

I have one "plain" 1911 in my carry rotation. But it is nowhere near stock. At the very least, different sights, a rowel hammer, and a dehorn are mandatory.

My carry piece is sort of plain. It is a SA WWII Mil-Spec. I did upgrade the sights to Novak's and added a Wilson Combat "tactical" size thumb safety. Other than that, it's stock. I don't see a real need for any of the other features. I could probably live without the safety too, but my eyes aren't so good. If I were to not have my glasses on and try to see the standard WWII sights I'd pobably be in bad shape.

I carry a SA GI Milspec that I replaced the mainspring housing on. I now have a flat housing without the ILS lock. I've also put alumagrips and a pearce modular grip on as well. Other than that, no changes, GI sights and all.

Hello.

My Mil-Spec has been frequently carried. Externally, few changes have been made. The guts have tuned by triggersmith, Teddy Jacobson, and I stuck on a different pair of grips.

This Mil-Spec has performed well since day one and continues to do so. Mr. Jacobson's work greatly helped the trigger pull in my gun.

The factory sights on my particular example of the pistol are dead bang "on" for me. I have no plans to change them.

The gun's been fired in excess of 2500 shots now with zero malfunctions and I
use the ISMI springs in this one.

Best.

Springfield GI, stock. I'm saving up thinking of the 4" GI. I thought about the 3.25", but it's just too darn small for me.

Mine is a mostly plain Colt NRM. A few modifications have been made including a feed ramp polish, shortened GI hammer, checkered walnut grips, polished barrel link, and a short trigger. All work was done by 1911Tuner, who is a class act. :)
