Anyone have a set number of magazines for a given type of firearm?

I'm settling on about 10 mags for rifle and 5 for each type of handgun.

For you guys who have like hundreds of guns, do you stock mags for them, or just have one each?

As many as I can afford. I would feel comfortable with 40-50 for working guns (1911, AR, and eventually MBR).

Depends on what they cost and how much I can afford to spend. I would prefer to eventually have at least ten magazines for each firearm.

I have at least 5 magazines for every detachable magazine fed firearm that I own.

Some, such as the AR/AK/Uzi, I have 30-40 magazines. Most of these are used magazines purchased in bulk back before anyone had heard of a semiautomatic assaut weapon and they were dirt cheap.

Daniel,
I would feel comfortable with 40-50 for working guns (1911, AR, and eventually MBR).

Holy flash suppressors, Batman, 40-50 ROUNDS or MAGAZINES?!?!??!!

40 or 50 magazines per gun.

I wish I had been hording GI surplus 30 round AR mags, back when they were $10 a piece. I've only got 7 at the moment, and they are pretty beat up.

/me anxiously awaits September 15th, 1994

I like to have four to six magazines per gun, although I have a couple of "range guns" that I still only have two magazines for them at this point.

My G17 has 8. 4 factory, and 4 aftermarket. I would prefer another 2 factory, but will wait until I see what gives with the AWB.

I just bought a S&W1911 and it came with 2 mags. As soon as the $25 gift certificate comes I'm going to buy 2 more Wilson combat mags; I hope to have 10 for that as well.

On a side note I have 4 speed-loaders for my S&W 64-1 .357. Don't really need any more for IDPA.

AK - two 10s, four 30s, two 40s - couldn't carry more if I had them
1911 - three 8s - whenever I have surplus funds, that will increase by 3 Wilsons
FAL - five 20s - five more would be nice
MkII - two 10s - never needed more since it's just a range gun

Everything else is tube fed.

I think that 30-50 mags per gun sound good for serious guns. At some point they'll most likely become illegal, so I need a lifetime supply. At the moment, I don't have anywhere near that many (need...more...money!) I've got 5 1911 mags (2 Wilson, 3 GI), 7 AR mags (5 30s, 1 40, 1 Beta-C), 8 20-round FAL mags, 2 Colt 1903 mags, and 1 Enfield mag. I'd like to get three or four more for the Enfield and two more for the 1903, and then up to 50 for the others.

i have 6 mags for my HK USP 45, and 5 mags for my Ruger KP95. 20-30 mags for a handgun is excessive. you gonna carry all that 30 mags with you? i guess you'll need it when there's a platoon of intruders in your home.

Well... I have an awful lot of 1911 magazines. Probably more than I have for all my other guns combined. ;) I think I have about 20 not pictured here.

Usually I like to have three minimum. One to use, one as a spare and one as a spare to the spare. :p

Magazines and ammo go hand in hand, in my opinion there is never too many or too much of a good thing. Rafters creaking, floors groaning, forklifts beeping...gotta get more....bah hahahahahah

I remember going to a M-2 .50 cal range and a semi pulled up with a forklift on the back. In the pallets was 26,000 .50 cal rounds in belts...bah ha hahahahhha

All right I'm better now

Nice looking collection....
Beretta 92FS - 2 - 15rnd / 2 - 10rnd / 1 - 23rnd
1911's - 5 - 8 rnd / 1 good Wilson (get more Wilson's-good stuff)
Beretta Jaguar - 1 factory and 1 aftermarket.. (the factory ones are hard to find....saw one for $75. - ouch/should have bought it tho.)
all others (22's and rifles) have 2 each.
Only have 1 speed loader for my .38 tho - guess I need at least 1 more?

I never stop looking for a good deal, but for a rifle or a pistol fifteen to twenty factory or equivalent quality original or higher capacity magazines per firearm make me all warm and fuzzy inside.

That's just my comfort zone though....I prefer more :uhoh:

$$$ Damn Klinton :cuss:

Imagine all the schooling and other stuff I could have payed for instead of magazines :(

I hope the AWB sunsets, but if it doesn't, at least I'll still be sittin' alright....

Skunk- Magazines. Notice I said working guns not playthangs. Looks like its time to brown bag your lunch eh? ;)

gudel- Actually I keep my magazines with my tinfoil hat. Beside that is the article about how the Red Chinee are ready to invade from that Costco warehouse in California. Gotta stock up! Really its because some gunowners actually train with their guns...and train hard. Magazines break. They get lost. They wear out. They are disposable. And since we know from history that the .gov will ban magazines, I want to have a supply that can carry me through my training.

gudel, as I no longer have an IFV to carry my stuff around, no I won't carry 30 mags with me. However, as Dan sez, magazines become damaged or worn from training. In a year and a half I went through over a dozen 1911 mags used in class. As well, carry mags get rotated and replaced. Besides the fight will last as long as I have ammo.:D

I use the following formula to calculate my bare minimum number of magazines for each fire arm type:

All I can afford!

Actually:
Rifle w/detach mag (bolt action or rimfire) -5 mags
Rifle w/detach mag (semi) -20 mags of full capacity
Handgun that is designed to hold more than 10 rounds -6 full capacity mags, 6 Clinton mags
Hangun whos full capacity is less than or equal to 10 rounds -6 mags.

This is the minimum and in many cases I have more but it upsets me until I get atleast this many and usually buy them the same day as the firearm. This is regardell of it is a mk2 .22 pistol or a defensive gun and it is per pistol not type. For example since I have almost a dozen 1911 full size pistols I have almost 80 wilson 47's. I have 2 glock 19's so I have 12 10 rounders and 12 full cap.

I have serious storage issues.

Depends.

Is the gun just "in the collection"? Then one or two magazines is just peachy.

Is it a handgun that's in my carry battery? Then four magazines is the minimum, more is preferred.

Is it a rifle that may be used for "social purposes"? Then a whole bunch of magazines, most kept loaded, are the norm.

As an illustration: I have two magazines for my Beretta AR-70 and fifteen for my HK91. Both of these numbers seem fine given the roles of the gun in question.
