Maybe a better way of asking the throat erosion question, along with shoulder (my shoulder, not the rifle's:) ) erosion question is this:

When you bring your bolt action (centerfire) rifle to the range, how much ammo do you usually shoot up? Over how long?

With my Mosin I was averaging about 120 or so over an hour and a half, but I'm starting to worry that is too much too fast.

Sure is fun, though.

don't sweat the throat erosion in your mil-surp rifles.

those guns are cheap. because they are cheap, they lend themselves to all sorts of fun you wouldn't dare pull w/ your $1500 semi-custom. so, go have fun w/ it! if you burn out the throat, who cares?? as long as you can get a few hundred bucks worth of fun out of the gun, it has served its purpose, no?

you won't notice throat erosion in a mil-surp, either. the guys who note throat erosion are the guys who would laugh themselves to death at a rifle that is 'only' capable of putting 5 shots into a dime at 200 yards...

enjoy your rifle - its what you got it for.

When I take a bolt action to the range is for sighting in and function checks. I don't shoot any more than necessary to ensure POI. I try to keep the barrel from getting hot, since I'm only interested in the first shot from a cold barrel.

A few boxes of 20 is about it for me when it comes to milsurps. Most of those old bolt actions are still pretty accurate - I had an M44 that could do around 1.5" at 50 yards consistently - not fantastic or anything, but accurate enough to see what you can do with them.

Of course, if you're talking a whole DAY at the range, I'd imagine 100+ rounds would be in order.

I usually shoot 50-60 rounds out of my centerfire rifles per range session, to preserve my shoulder. Then I switch to my .22lr. Of course, when I shoot my AR, it's 100+ (until my eye gets tired). I usually spend about 4 hours at the range, but that includes my pistol time, so let's say about 2 hours give or take.

If you are worried about using up your Mosin Nagant too fast, just buy a spare. That's what I did, as they are both inexpensive and readily available.

I shot 20 from my 91/30 last time I was at the range. My conclusion?

1. Wear something other than a wife beater.

2. Get a recoil pad.

Actually shot very decently but my shoulder hurt afterwards.:)

Don't you enjoy shooting?

I am very suprised at the small amount of ammunition some of you guys burn! Maybe its just that I live an hour from the range so I have to make the most of it?

Probably. When I lived an hour away from the range, I'd pack up a dozen or so rifles, a few hundred rounds of centerfire ammo and spend the entire day at the range. Now that I go to a range 10 minutes away, I usually only take 1 or 2 rifles and 20 rounds or less for each.

Home on the range...

Yeah, I'm about 45 minutes away, and with finding time to get out there, when I go I want to spend the day. I usually get a good 2.5 hours in, but with target changes on the 1/2 hour it can be a pain to bring both pistol and rifle.

I definitely need some spare Mosins...:D

Most centerfire bolt guns are used for hunting,

however, the milsurp guns are fun to shoot a lot. I have a CZ-452 in .223 and when I go to the range, I shoot it and the AR about 100 rounds. If I shoot the Enfield, it's MUCH more.
For the hunting guns, about ten to thirty rounds to make sure I can still hit POA with my chosen hunting loads. (and to remind myself how to use a scope)

Bet it depends on caliber!

If you shoot .223, as much as you want...
If you shoot .50 bmg, probably as much as your shoulder/ budget will allow:evil: !!

About 60 rounds from the Mosin-Nagant M-44 is all I can stand.

Now, if I was tenderizing some steaks...a lot more by using the steaks as a recoil pad...:D  :D  :D

Somehow, that is what I think the Soviets built all those M-N's for...tenderizing meat. It will certainly 'tenderize' your shoulder...

I usually bring two rifles to the range, but never two bruisers at the same time. I'd shoot maybe 10 rounds from the hard-hitter, then switch to the toy gun (AR or SKS) for a while. Typical ammo consumption in one afternoon is 60 rounds hard stuff and 100+ soft stuff.

Surplus Greek .303 comes in boxes of 32, and I usually burn up three or four boxes.

Hold on, is this a stockpile or do you have a supplier (who is willing to share)?

Our local bolt-action rifle matches state to expect about 100rds.

I think last month it was:

7 targets (~250yds - ~425yds) x 4 positions = 28rds
6 targets (~150yds - ~275yds) x 5 positions = 30rds
5 targets (200yds) x 5 positions = 25rds

83rds if you don't miss. I shot at LEAST 100rds.

I had 28 "hits" in 486.93 on the first stage, and not every shot was a hit. Maybe an average of 1 shot every 15 seconds.

2nd stage was 30 "hits" in 473.03s. Maybe 1 shot every 13s.

The last stage is a little different. With 5 shots (and only 5 shots) per string, but a delay for other shooters between strings.

Lots of high-dollar gear. No idea what that rate of fire is doing to the rifles.

Mike

80 rounds.

I have a Yugo M-48A Mauser and 80 rounds is what the two double magazine pouches I have for it will hold. :) Sometimes I will bring more, but that's usually enough for me for one afternoon. I need to get some Mosin-Nagant ammo pouches for my Finn M-39 (and the M-N M-44 I will no doubt soon be forced to buy) so I can do the same thing.

Stockpile via Cheaper Than Dirt. It was a Christmas present from my dad, along with lots of boxes of 9mm and .45.

When taking one of my Mausers out for a spin, one bandolier (70rds) is about enough for an hour's shooting.

When taking the CZ 452 out...a couple of boxes per hour is more like it.

I like Riverdogs answer.

But to tell the truth I can go through 80-100 rounds with my 338 Lapua in a session easy. Hey I need to make sure that I can score a hit with that CB shot when I need to out to 1500 plus so I need a lot of practice:)

it really depends on what im trying to accomplish. im just warming her up and checking zero. Or am i testing out new brands of ammo?
