How much ammo on a hunting trip?

Another vote for bringing a 2nd rifle or a shotgun.

I got invited to hunt Hog & Deer at a hunting club in SW Arkansas. I brought my primary Deer Gun. I should've also brought shotgun with me. The club include a wetland area that was teaming with ducks. I saw no Deer or live Hogs but could've had a grand old time Duck hunting.

Driving around the local National Forest 2 weeks ago before Deer Season started in Missouri, we bumped into a couple hunters that were already camped out there. The fellow I chatted with mentioned that they were planning on Squirrel Hunting for a couple days before Deer Season started. That seemed smart - I've had no luck with Deer this year but the Squirrels are everywhere.

I usually hunt at my tree farm for a week at a time. If I'm lucky, I'll get one shot ... and it better count. However, I also take more than one rifle with about 10 rounds for each.

However, when I went to Africa, the guide had me shoot at all kinds of things the first day or so. He'd stop the truck and tell me to shoot an ostrich egg in an abandoned nest. I had to estimate the distance and shoot it. After I shot about 8 rounds at various things, I told him that I was going to run out of ammo if he kept this game going. I was shooting a 7x57 AI and had only brought 50 handloads with. I had demonstrated that I could shoot my gun and hit a target with it so he relented. I had also brought a couple of boxes of .357 mag. ammo to give one to a friend. It turned out that the box of 50 would cost over 35 rands in So. Africa IF they could be found. At the time a rand was worth more than $1 US. I had paid $5.30 for the box. The extra box made a great gift to my guide.

So, always bring about 1 1/2 times what you think you'll need.

When I was helping a friend with hogs, I would take 60rds. That was for a weekend trip. Some trips I would only fire one round, some I fired them all. Averaged out over a year, probably a box of 20 per weekend.

As mentioned, take the allowed amount, better to have it than not.

I have never needed more than one round to put a deer down but I'm allowed to have 10 rounds in the field with me & i'll have another mag with 10rds back at the truck, in case I drop & loose my mag.
I had a buddy drop his mag of ammo (I think he left it at home) & he had to sit out opening morning with a empty gun. LOL
Come on guys you are hunting, not going to war.
Yea I quoted myself.
I have to take a step back at making fun of my friend that lost his mag while hunting.
Just yesterday on the first day of gun season while I was hoisting my gun up into my ladder tree stand as I pulled the gun over the rail it bumped the rail. Just then the mag dropped out of my 350 legend AR, it didn't have a round in the chamber but as it fell i caught it with my feet on the foot rest of the stand right at the edge of falling off. So it is possible to loose a mag while hunting.

Regarding bag limits, they are cull hunts, first 70 pigs per party is free, each pig after is charged in addition at the end of the shoot. Nursing sows are verboten with a hefty fine if you shoot one.
Also I think the shoot outfitter has a veto on guns, I know my 30/30 was regarded as marginal and my 308 was not. My 357 mag carbine was a definite no-no, ditto my 223. The cut off point is muzzle energy for which a certain figure must be exceeded, I think it's 1500 foot pounds but am not certain, maybe more maybe less.

I might ship a couple boxes ahead of time and a firearm also. Bad enough not having cloths for a week let along no shooting iron and ammo. The outfitter should be able to do that.

Are you hunting in the UK or another country?

How many will be in your party? I would carry 2 spare 20rd boxes of ammo on you for that hunt, plus what's in your gun.
I would have at least another 80rds back at the camp.

The idea being if one of your buddies shows up with no ammo. If he has the same caliber as you, you could loan him some ammo.

60. 50 in camp and 10 in a home made cartridge carrier when in the field. Nine years ago another hunter with me missed an easy shot. I found his scope base was loose. And over the course of the next day I fix it and sited in his gun. He got a nice buck with my ammo. He didn't have enough of his own to site in and hunt. I've never had to shoot 10 times in a day, though. I did mix some .270 with my 30.06 though and was glad I had some extra to hunt with that day.

It'll be in Hungary. 15 max I think as that's all the rooms in the chateau.
I only reload and in the UKnever loan or give reloaded ammo for use in a different gun

I take it, that it's the law that you cannot loan/give reloaded ammo?

Two bullets per day my dad gave me. One for the shot, another misery shot. If that ain't enough then you suck.
Last time I went deer hunting there were so many idiots out there and rounds flying everywhere it was like a dang war zone, bullets flying over my head even with a red vest on.

When I went on western hunts, I always took 2 rifles with 20rds each. Now I hunt close to home and might have a box in the truck, but seldom take more than is in the magazine. I don't remember when I had to shoot twice.

Many would argue that if you need a misery shot, you suck, LOL. The OP is talking about a boar hunt. He is going to need more than 2 rounds a day. Franz-Albrecht doesn't suck (arguably one of the best driven boar hunters in the world) and he needs more than two rounds a day, LOL.

Well, after watching all yer missed shots on your video you sure need more than two.

I was simply pointing out the silliness of a standard, that one, such as yourself, establishes based on what you do whereby anyone not to your standard "sucks." Of course, this is the safest thing you say, because you can't fail your own standard, right? You are the baseline, but then take offense when somebody suggests others thinks your standard doesn't cut it.

My rule of thumb was always take lots of ammo. I always had enough in case we were attacked by drug traffickers. We hunted on the Mexican border in some remote areas. I always had a full bandolier with 20 rds. I looked like Pancho Villa without the sombrero. I know that sounds stupid but dress for the weather.

In your case 50 rounds should be plenty.

I used to hunt pheasants/huns/quail/chukar on the Snake R. My buddy was a duck hunter also (I never was) so when we saw ducks on a creek we stopped to shop. He stalked them with his Lab from about 200 yds..from cover. Result was 2 ducks. Be prepared for whatever presents itself.

A few people who I bumped into fished for Steelhead with river sleds from our state park camp. I'm convinced some of those jokers accessed some prime deer hunting areas from the river with their boats. They may or may not have been hunting on private, posted, land with permission or membership. But that was none of my bidness. ;)

I’d take the number of rounds you may shoot in a day (10 x 4 days) and double it. Bring 80 rounds (Be sure to follow any ammunition restrictions). You can always bring it home or gift it to your guide for resale. Why risk the trip of a lifetime for $200 worth of ammo?
