How much do autoloaders reduce recoil?

Home defense........... Look into a "Coach " shotgun. 20 ga. Try the re-duced loads.

"Auto`s" may reduce the recoil a tad but it`s still a shotgun and recoil is just part of it.

To answer the question, I have a wide variety of shotguns and due to a shoulder injury at times need to use a lighter recoil gun. If I am not in pain, I shoot an over/under. Moderate pain, 20 gauge o/u or 12. Gauge gas auto depending on game and walking. The softest shooter is a 20 gauge gas auto by a lot. The best I found is an 1100 20 gauge. I also have a Franchi 720 that is lighter and great to shoot. So go 20 gauge gas semi auto with a short barrel. Slower loads help as well.

Actually, I don't find a 9 lb 10 gauge that bad on the shoulder. Don't fire that many rounds, usually less than a box goose hunting. If I was shootin' a lot, might be another deal, but I don't get that sore from the 10.

Yeah, the 535 Mossy is rough. It's just too light for 3.5" stuff. I'll stick with the 10. :D

McG - I have a friend who arranges bird shooting all over the world. Most three day trips to there can be had for very reasonable costs plus ammo and airfare, certainly less than a typical three day Georgia quail hunt or S. Dak pheasant hunt, let alone a TX exotic hunt

Well here is my 2 cents worth and it isnt much . I am 55 have had both knees replaced a foot rebuilt and a torn rotator cuff in my shooting shoulder R handed
and various other problems . I shoot a mossberg 500 pump and a 870 exp . but when i am having a bad day and hurting from arthritis i use a remington 1100 in 12 gauge . 12 gauge is the most versitile shotgun round i know . light target loads kick no worse then a .410 with slugs and at home defense range measured in feet not yards are just like shooting slugs Glasser safety slugs to be exact . A load of #8 bird shot at 20 feet with a full choke turkey barrel will spread about 3 inches and 350 bbs going 1400 fps in a 3 inch circle is going to make a mess out of whatever it hits. with not too much over penetration ie. drywall ect in a pump gun those loads are easy to manage . Save buckshot and slugs for anything measured in yards out to 100 yards i can and have gotten deer with slugs at that range .
