I was offered a Sand hill crane lease yesterday: $950
A lease for Quail:$1000
A lease for pigs, deer, turkey and dove (year round) $3250

I don't have the money for these leases. I have purchased the public land permit for Texas, but in this part of the country (High Plains of West Texas) the public lands are basically only for upland birds. If you see a deer or pig, you must have a special permit by draw, or else !!

I do not blame the landowners, they have taxes to pay and have been burned too many times by people.

In Texas, hunting is a rich man's sport.

We have good waterfowl down here, public land. Other than that, you're right. That's why I bought my place in '88. I'd never had a place to hunt deer. Leases, even when they were "affordable" were hard to find. I joined a hunting club for about 7 years, but having your own property is a much better deal.

I hunt 4 or more state a year for different prey it adds up in license fees, lodging and meals. It is worth every penny!!!!!!

"I joined a hunting club for about 7 years, but having your own property is a much better deal. "

Are these very common? Is it like a shared lease? I have not seen any of these on the high plains.

It could be very inexpensive for me but I hunt all year. Coyotes, prairie dogs, turkeys, deer, coons, squirells, rabbits, doves, pheasants, crows, and quail. I know that between lost hours at work:) new gear, lots of ammo, licenses(the cheap part), and hunting clothing, it is well over $3500/year. But I like buying and using my new toys every chance I get!!

Generally free to hunt here with no limits and no guides, All our huntable species are introduced pests or plagues(hogs, goats, horses, wild dogs, roos, donkeys, wild cattle, camels etc.), with more numbers than humans, since we have only have a population the same as Texas in an area the size of the US mainland.Leaves a lot of space for things to multiply.Hunting is more like culling -you can take a hundred animals in a weekend if you find a good spot. You guys could do the same if you came here.
Buffalo, banteng and some of the deer species fall more into trophy and guided categories as you guys have.

The downside to all this bragging is we don't have the human numbers to fight off the worst pests of all, the UN antis. What numbers we do have are lazy, which is why we lost a lot of guns.

Karl.

Does beer and whiskey count?

Hunting is my ideal of a vacation, so I easily average between $1k and $2K per year. This year I went dove hunting in Argentina, so 2006 will close out around $5K.

I am in the D/FW area, but have hunting opportunities in West Texas, South Central Texas, and New Mexico, so I spend a ton on gas and related travel expenses. I would estimate $500/year in gas alone.

Texas combo license plus New Mexico non-resident dove adds about a $100/year.

Figure a new gun every 4 - 5 years = $250/year

Lease fees (deer) - $450/year

Processing cost

Fees for day hunts (wing shooting)

Range time for sighting in guns

Hunting magazine & DVDs

Ammo

Replace worn out gear and camping equipment

No wonder I am broke all the time
