If any, does anyone know. I just got a knife that says Cuttin' Horse Smith & Wesson. It is like a lockblade knife. On the other side of the blade it says hammer forged surgical china.

Got me to thinking.

How much of my 629, 686, m&p9 is made in China. Are my guns 100% USA made. Thought I would just ask here.

This is what you get for voting democratic, you know...

To my relatively decent knowledge, none of the guns are made there, nor is any steel made in East Asia, China or elsewhere. The guns are all USA made. This is how they stay so far in advance of Taurus, etc. in quality. The knife line, and other accessories, are whored out to china as much as any other Wal-Mart product. I have a dozen S&W handguns, but I've rejected buying any knives of theirs for this reason.

When Clinton sold out our MFN status to China, lots of bad things ensued, and the bill is just coming due. I stopped buying "chinese" about 7 years ago. Japan and Korea are OK - dont' get me wrong, it's not racist - it's based on fair trade practices, living standards and human rights. Buying Chinese is just Anti-American.

I was in a major retailer recently - Bed Bath & Beyond I think. I was looking for cast iron pans - and all were from Emeril Lagasse, and all cheap crap from China. The sales lady asked me why I didn't like what she'd shown me, and I just politely said I'd buy American goods (at the same price) elsewhere. And never listen to Emeril Lagasse again!

Another example: Calphalon vs. Kitchenaid. I am an avid cook. We have lots of both products; they are good quality. I noticed my Kitchen Aid high-temp spatulas, etc. were melting after normal use. My Claphalon brands were not. Flip them over and read the fine print. Both say "400C (that's celsius, not Fahrenheit) Safe." KitchenAid said: "Made in China." All the Calphalon products said "Made in USA." Same claim to durability, but only one lived up to it. KitchenAid is no longer on my buy list, whoring themselves out to low-quality Chinese production and claiming it's better than it is.

Yes, S&W knives are not good. But their guns are, so just buy them, and send them a note saying why you don't buy the knives. Then tell them to drop the internal locks on the revolvers.:)

They are 0.0% Chinese made. It's been illegal to import a rifled-barrel firearm from China since the 1990s. I've been to the S&W factory in Springfield and can attest that, with the exception of the steel (which comes from Italy, of all places), those guns are 100% U.S. made.

By the way, China had MFN-status long before Clinton.

The S&W or Remington branded knick-knacks like knifes and baseball caps are totally seperate from the firearms manufacturing. Companies license their name to contract manufactures in places like China who make all this junk. It's pure profit for S&W. You can buy a Ferrari umbrella if you want.

A heck of a lot of companies have their products made elsewhere, then ship the parts to the U.S. to assemble and stamp on "made in USA". All the automakers, Harley Davidson, etc are like that. Is there any source that all parts of S&W are made in the U.S.?

And tell them to quit putting MIM parts in their guns. While your at it, tell them to lower their prices too. Then I can quit buying Ruger and start buying SW again.

I will say this....

About 12 years ago I saw a copy of an invoice from a company in China to the SMITH&WESSON COMPANY, U. S. OF A. for revolver frame castings, J frames to be exact. What I cannot remember for the life of me was whether it was from Nationalist China or red China. I had the impression at the time the castings were samples.
The copy of the invoice came straight out of the S&W plant in Springfield MA.

Not sure what you saw, but they don't use cast frames in their production guns. The frames are forged by the forges I saw in person in Springfield in 2008. I also saw piles of fresh forgings in various states of manufacture.

Oro, FWIW, my father-in-law is Japanese, lives about an hour north of Tokyo, and he won't buy anything made in China, either. Last time my in-laws visited he was astonished to see how much we've (Americans) sold ourselves down the river with cheap Chinese junk. Japan has the problem too, but enough Japanese are stubborn patriots that its not as bad as here.

I've been pretty upset lately to see 'japanese cars' getting turned into a scapegoat all over again due to this US carmaker bailout thing. Anybody who thinks Honda and Toyota are to blame for making a great product has their head stuffed in the wrong place.

Just so there's something firearms related here ... my father in-law is in the extreme minority of Japanese firearms owners - he's got a few beautiful break-barrel shotguns for hunting quail and shooting skeet.

As I see it, one can do several things to clarify this situation. Under the Freedom of Information Act one can request from the Treasury Dept. as to what, if any, products are imported by S & W or one could just go to the horses mouth.

As for Japanese cars and trucks I and many others will attest that they are better than American. Japan beat us at our own game by constantly improving and reinvesting - quite simply they cleaned our clock decades ago.

Strawhat, could you tell me what parts are sintered in my Rugers? Everything looks investment cast and machined to me.
