How much oomph to poke an armadillo?

Hmmmm....do you have a 458 Win Mag- you don't need solids for them but a stout 500 gr expanding lead core bullet will still penetrate....you must hit them on the point of the shoulder......

.....or I guess a 22 long rifle would do.

You need energy dump and bullet upset. My guess is your 30-30 was loaded with 150 or 170 grain bullets suited for deer and black bears so they just penciled right on through without any major bullet upset. Little guys like an armadillo seem to die pretty easy with a high velocity hp 22lr like a stinger or the 1435 fps 40 grain HPs from Winchester. Getting into true varmint guns with 3k plus franglibles probably isn't needed but they certainly work. However I do agree in close home environments like a subdivision non-lethal is probably a better choice for nuisance animals who don't pose actual risks to people and pets.

Shot one with a sks once hit 5 times in body it ran away fmj bullets just went straight through.
Shot another one the next day body hit with a soft point 30-30 drt exit was softball sized.
.22lr works quite well up close much cheaper and quieter.

We saw one flattened on a street in Newton, Illinois a few years ago. It was a fluke of some sort... it must have hitched a ride under a vehicle to get here.

Nah, it is climate change, now you yankees will get to enjoy the sport of 'dilla kill'n too :). You get more points if during the sport of 'dilla kill'n you first shoot at him (an intentional miss as in under the critter) to make him jump straight up three or four feet and then pop him at the apex of his trajectory. Two can play this also, taking turns, first to miss the, uh, jump shot, is a rotten yankee! There are different variations so y'all can get creative.

Like playing Annie Oakley kinda but not really. I like it. Anybody figured out what a 12 ga slug does if you connect to an airborn armadillo?

I'm beginning to see a trend, here. Wonder if there are little stickers a guy could put on his quarter panel, a la WWII fighter plane?

Mac

Well, I think some 'dillas have similar stickers on their carapace for the motorcycles and bicycles they have taken out. It is especially satisfying when I take out an Ace'dilla. It is war, war is hell and it is ugly, and so far it is a draw.

I shot a plastic RV hubcap with a whole magazine of 9mm luger from a Beretta M9, and didn't make one hole, at 15 feet. Bullet ogive, and the curvature of the hubcap just worked to reflect. I would not believe it if it wasn't me, same for the guy with me at the time. Only saying this because its similar to your 30-30 100 yard shot. Probably could never be repeated, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

best of both worlds?

Shootin' armadillos has no braggin' rights. We just get downwind and ease up to 'em, the grab 'em on a sack. May Florida'dillos are especially stupid, or slow, but that's how its done. On afternoon I got eight that way on a golf course in Jupiter. Jus' sacked 'em and then a lil' roadtrip before release. If this fat old white guy can do it.... Just sayin'!

Now for the Redneck answer

Ya need to use a small Econo car at minimum, a 1/2 ton truck or bigger is preferred. Do NOT use any type of motorcycle EVER! Motorcycles and dillo's do not mix well (same as turtles). I don't suggest an ATV or UTV either, way to light for the job.

Seriously a well placed shot from a 22lr will do the job. But hey its always fun to hit'm with a 30-30 or bigger - natural tannerite.

I did score one up the road from here with my jeep. And they stress me out at night when I'm riding my motorcycle. I heard a story that they carry leprosy- I believe the story was that some lab was doing experiments on them and some got away. No idea if there is any truth to the story.
