How much will you pay for ammo?

thats way too much for .22lr, saw it gunshow the other day at the same price, no one was touching it. I think we will see this for a while yet.
 
Holy crap. I bought 10 bulk packs at WalMart just like these last year "just in case". Really glad I did now.
 
Only retail prices as listed last September/October.
There was just one distributor (Palmetto State) selling .303 'British' at September prices as recently as a month ago -I bought ten boxes- but their supply quickly sold out at that time.

It baffles me that some people waited until After the November election to buy any ammo, guns etc, unless they previously had no extra cash.
People with the cash should have been able to imagine that any tragedy would be exploited to the extreme, by both a certain faction and most of the media.

They Always have the Motive, just waiting for an opportunity.
Why was this so difficult to anticipate, after the recent horrors of Tucson, Aurora, Portland?

Me too. I bought my first EBR right after Bush Senior stopped selected imports. Times for many are a little different as compared to when the 1994 AWB passed. I barely knew the legislation was passed. But I was a subscriber to Gun List then. But for most folks, there was no internet yet. The "You Got Mail" movie came out in 1998. So internet communication was still very new.
 
guilty myself.... just picked up 200 rounds of .22 short for $17.98. I was just happy to find it on the shelf of a country gun shop yesterday. Not too bad, but still around 11 cents per round.
 
That's regular price at some gun shops I visit. It does bug me sometimes when I see these shops selling Federal Walmart ammo. But I understand.
 
Yep. I just don't understand the panic. But then, I first started buying stuff "just in case" about 40 years ago. after the 1968 GCA. My first hobby for years has been buying ammo when it's cheap (and I'm not selling any). I think it's important, and fun, to have more ammo than I can possibly shoot up. I take my adult children and their friends out shooting and supply the ammo, without it stinging any. My wife occasionally mentions the cases of ammo in the garage, but only when it's in the way... My point is - I bought it cheap and often so that I have no need to panic. (Anybody need a 7# keg of shotgun powder? - Oh, wait - I won't sell that, either as I reload)
 
I have rached my limit, I won't pay a dollar a round, to practice. I can wait till it comes down, and have what I need in the meantime. We should have all seen this coming.
 
Yeah I'm relatively new to firearms ownership. I bought my first gun, a 10-22 in October of 08? Anyway just before Obama/McCain election. I bought two boxes of the federal 550rd boxes at Walmart and had a few fun days out at the range. When I had kicked the first box I went back to wal mart and the shelves were bare. Oh well I thought. Then I would check each time I happened to be in the store. Nothing. Then one day I happened to get there just as they were restocking and I bought a couple. As I was checking out I became aware of another customer speaking into his cellphone that "yeah they have that .22 now did he want him to pick some up?"

It was all the education I needed. I picked up a third box and decided that I would try to grab at least one whenever they had them. For the next several weeks I checked and they had none. I became aware of peculiar procedures on the part of the employees. One time I was asked the customary 'can I help you find something' by a sporting goods employee. When I told her that I was looking for the federal bulk pack .22 she told me that they were out and continued that she was not allowed to tell me when they expected their ammunition shipment. I hadn't asked.

A couple weeks later, probably 8 weeks since I bought the three boxes, I found myself in the right place at the right time again. A different salesman was present this time. I told him what I was looking for and he volunteered the fact that the store manager had put a six box limit on ammunition and he further volunteered that if it were up to him it would be two.

I bought six boxes. Then I figured I was good for a while.

Gradually the hoopla subsided and I would pick up a box now and then. They started getting the Winchester bulk 555 packs instead of the federal which was fine with me.

I've found that in the gun rights related discussions of the last few weeks that one thing that non gun folks seem to zero in on as a red flag when it comes to gun owners is ammunition stockpiling. Basically that anyone who keeps a supply of ammo is basically not right in the head... Someone to watch out for or keep an eye one for further suspicious behavior.

I try to convey to them the idea that I don't want to be affected by these random runs on the ammunition supply line. (Which they are completely oblivious to by the way.) I don't want to have to buy cci premium stuff (and its premium price) to go plink with. I don't consider myself to be crazy to have these goals. The answer is to have a nice buffer stocked away at home. Just because that asshat in Colorado had 3000 rds of .223 stocked up for his rampage doesn't mean that I am like him in any way.

There is legislation in New York (where I live.) to bar the online sale of ammunition. I strongly disagree with this. Out of his 3000 rounds he got through maybe 25? Before his crappy betamag jammed up and he switched to the shotgun. There's no way he was carrying 3000 rounds anyway. I don't know why he bought 3000 rounds, but then he's a crazy bastard. By all means lets legislate in a reactionary way to the actions of a crazy bastard.

I've paid $7 a box for CCI .22LR ammo before. If you want to shoot or have some to store up then the only difference now is the brand. Gas use to cost .25 a gallon, when the '73 gas ration happened it jumped to $1 a gallon. You'd have thought it was the end of the world, the complaints people made. But they paid it. Now $1 a gallon gas would be considered a super bargain.

So my suggestion is to ignore what everyone here is suggesting, including myself, and ask yourself two questions. 1) Do I want/need this ammo, either to use or as a comfort to know I've got it? and 2) Do I have the money to get it? Then figure out what your answers would be.
