:scrutiny:I have a S&W that was owned by my father and he recieved it from his father! According to his story, his father carried it as he made house calls in Cleveland, Ohio as a Doctor back in the day. He also said that it was never fired. The revolver is a S&W 38 spcl. CTG. It has a serial # on the butt...274923. There's four numbers locacted just below the barrel when you release the cylinder...6077. The top of the barrel is the copyright dates range from Oct. 8, 1901 to Dec. 29, 1914. The weapon is blue with minimal wear on the finish. It has alot of sentimental value and some help would be imensely appreciated.

A picture would be nice and even more a specific question as to what you would like from us in the form of help. Never mind your question is in the title.

Try finding the following book: Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, by Jim Supica, Richard Nahas.

It would appear that you have a Smith & Wesson .38 Military & Police, also called the .38 1905 Hand Ejector, 4th change. The approximate date of manufacturer is 1916.

Be aware that the cylinder is not heat treated, so avoid so-called "Plus-P" ammunition. Also it does not have a positive hammer block so if you carry it rest the hammer on an empty chamber.

Given that this revolver has a history within your family, I suggest that you get it lettered by the company. See details below:

Information concerning historical letters of authentication from Smith & Wesson’s historian, Roy G. Jinks can be obtained from the link listed below.

In exchange for a $50.00 research fee (make any check out to Smith & Wesson, not Mr. Jinks) he will search through the company’s original hand written records until he finds your particular revolver. He will then send you an official letter which usually includes:

A short history of the revolver model’s background.

What the barrel length, caliber/cartridge, finish and stocks were, as well as the exact date it was shipped from the factory – and to what distributor, dealer or individual – as whatever the case may be.
