My wife pulled out a sealed foodsaver bag of 2 venison backstraps from the freezer. It was packaged 11/16/04. I cubed it for a stew in a crock pot tonight. Smelled gamey like usual...not at all bad.

My question...it that meat too old to consume after 2 years of a solid freeze??

I just want to get an idea so we don't get sick from eating it.

Thanks for any help.

I've had things 4 years old that were still good, as long as they were frozen totally the entire time. Using a food saver system pulls out the air so freezer burn should also not be an issue.

2 years is getting up there for any frozen meat, but it should be fine. Normally the fat spoils first with pork starting to fade at 6 months, and beef right around a year. So sausage goes first, burger later, tenderloin last. I just try to use everything the first year or the freezer starts filling up anyway.
