How short of a Saiga barrel with poly Choke?

Without the proper paperwork, 18" is the minimum barrel length
I understand 100% the law. I'm just trying to find out reliably can / will a Saiga 12 cycle on Walmart ammo, and slugs by just adjusting gas setting. I want to know how short I can cut the barrel and run a poly choke reliably. I appreciate the help...

We moved the gas system back on this one; it was 18.1" to the end of the threads on the Savage AccuChoke (a combination PolyChoke and Cutts from the long long ago). Ran whatever you fed it.
However, getting to that stage required a full machine shop and a couple of guys who like to work on (and mutilate) Saigas in strange ways.
Should be able to get it to run with a welded-on Poly to 18.1" (just remember that the measurements are taken with the threaded 'choke adjustment" parts...removed...lest you get too short measuring when the choke assembly is completely installed). A matter of balancing the size of the gas ports, recoil spring weight, and a lighter hammer spring to reduce drag on the bolt carrier.

I do not think anyone can give you a 100% universal answer. Some guns are on the ragged edge of running with a 19" barrel others have cut the barrel back a few inches without touching the gas system and been fine. Some people have had to modify the gas system when cutting the barrel back just a couple inches and installing a permanant muzzle device.
My guess based on what I have seen and heard from much more knowledgeable people on the matter is that some guns might function with high brass heavy loads with a 12" barrel and stock gas system. I highly doubt that you are going to get a gun to reliably run light loads with the barrel you describe unless you modify the gas system.
If you want to shoot only slugs and buck then it might be worth a try. If you want to run the bulk ammo you buy at wal mart you probably need to have someone who knows saigas tweak the gas system.
