Some have expressed interest in contacting their representatives in Congress in order to forestall poor legislation that is being proposed.

I used to do legislative work for a grass-roots organization. Consequently, I want to provide the following simple information to anyone who wishes to do that. Mods, if this is taboo, please address it as you choose. My intentions were honorable.

Here's how to find the information to contact your congressmen:
Senators: There are 100 senators in congress - 2 from each state and each represents you equally. You can find your 2 here:
http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm

Representatives: There are 435 representatives divided by population among the varied states.
http://www.house.gov/
Find your representative by entering your zip code in the FIND YOUR REPRESENTATIVE area in the top-right corner of this page.

Remember,
Your one representative from the House or Representatives is elected every 2nd year - even numbered years. Your representative will face reelection in 2014.
You are represented in the Senate by 2 senators who serve 6-year terms. Their election cycles are staggered. By 2020, each of your senators will have faced reelection.

Individual emails or letters work best. If you send a form email or form letter it accounts for maybe 1/20 the impact of a personalized email or personalized letter in which you compose your thoughts yourself. Letters get more attention than emails because they required more investment on your part and indicate that you are invested enough to take the hour it takes to compose and print the letter, SIGN IT, address and stamp the envelope and mail it.

Be careful to use proper grammar and tone - just like we use here on The High Road. In my brief, two-paragraph letter, I explained that I didn't believe more gun laws were the answer because the two greatest criminal acts perpetrated during the last quarter century involved a Ryder truck with a home-made bomb and airliners hijacked with knives. I said that the reintroduction of morality in our communities is the answer. Threats are unwise, but I did tell each of my congressmen at the end of a professional, respectful, kindly worded letter that if he voted for any proposed gun legislation I would work to ensure his opponent was elected at the next election, feeling my voice was not being heard otherwise. And that's not an idle threat on my part... I will do that.

I hope this information is helpful to anyone who wishes to contact their representative about proposed legislation.

Fred I see you're from Louisiana, so I presume you contacted yours by smoke signal. Me being from Alabama, I had to use the Campbells soup cans.

We get anybody from Mississippi on here and I guess we'll hafta use that thing where you tie a note onto an arrow.

I read an article today that quoted Matt Damon as cynically saying Congress is only concerned with the next election. I agree with him, though it's unfortunate.

But we are wise to take that into account as we communicate with our representatives.
