I was wondering how to purposefully create a jam, without firing, on an ar15. I am getting deployed soon and want to train on weapon jams. Any ideas?

double feed: lock the bolt back. insert magazine. drop a cartridge in the ejection port door, let the bolt go forward and it will attempt to feed both cartridges.

misc other FTF: insert a dummy round in the mag. for best results, have friend insert it at random depth in mag so you don't know when you'll get it

Make a few bad cartridges. You can even do this without reloading gear. Just pull the bullet, dump the powder, fire off the primer and stuff the bullet back it, (if you don't have a press to resize the neck, I'd probably glue the bullet back in). That's good for a no fire. If you want to make it jam, bugger up the brass a bit. You could damage a magazine too. Then mix up your good and bad rounds and your good and bad mags and head to the range for a frustrating day of shooting.

It sounds like he wants to train at home, not at a range. Your best bet for this is what Taliv described. You want to get good at fixing that problem fast, but don't neglect good tactics. Remember the difference between an immediate action drill and a remedial action drill. Sling the rifle and either get to cover or draw your sidearm, as the situation allows. Once the threat is gone, figure out why your boom stick won't boom.

For at a range, mix up a magazine of dummy rounds, live rounds, and empty cases. You'll get plenty of opportunity to clear jams, and to switch magazines.

Like Coronach said, using empty, fired brass loaded back into a magazine will give you some challenging stoppages.

If you're shooting a personal AR on the range, buy some Wolf ammo. You should eventually start seeing assorted stoppages with it . . .

You may also wish to put a cartridge so it's vertical(with the chamber being horizontal) and stuck between the bolt and chamber/surrounding wall.

Not sure if a jam like this would ever happen, but try it once or twice just in case.

I'm sure I don't have to say this, But I will anyway, ALL of the "at home" playing should be done with dummy rounds NOT live ammo.

There now I feel better.
