I've heard some of the talk of converting the ar type rifles so that they are kali legal. i read that by simply attaching a kit that made the magazine fixed that would do it. Does anyone know if that's accurate? Would loading the thing be pivoting the upper to access the magazine be such a drag that it wouldn't be worth the hassle? Really wanting a bushy varminter and have for over a year now but i just dont know how easy it would be to make legal and if it would still be enjoyable to shoot. Your knowledge on the subject is greatly appreciated.

"if it would be illegal (and obviously immoral) for my neighbor to take what is mine justifying that it isn't fair that i might have more than he, then why is it okay for the government to do so. The answer is simply, it is not. Wealth redistribution is government plunder.:cuss: "

You need to buy a lower receiver that isnt listed on CA's AWB.. we call them "Off-List Lowers" (OLL) .. Like this one:

And then you need to build up the gun using normal parts and fix the mag using a mag-lock kit.. like this:
http://www.coldwarshooters.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=129

To load the gun, you need to break it open and load it from the top.

Another option is to remove the pistol grip and replace it with some of the creative grip options that people have developed. For example..

http://www.tenpercentfirearms.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=5&products_id=146

Be advised, even though all this is technically legal, the CA DOJ hasnt blessed any of the mag-lock kits or creative grip ideas. It all follows the letter of the law, but if some overzealous cop or DA busts you, you could spend some time and cash proving your innocence.

Another option is the Bushmaster Carbon-15.. http://www.bushmaster.com/shopping/Carbon15/azc-c15rm4ft.asp .. you can find them on the shelves at most gun shops. The magwell on these are sealed.

I have a Stag-15 bare lower.. Ill probably sell it sooner or later because Im not a fan of gimped rifles and wierd legal gray areas. I bought it in the hopes the CA would declare OLLs as AWs and we'd get to register them and have real rifles, but that isnt going to happen now. AB2728 passed which takes away the Attorney General's power to list anymore AWs as of Jan 1, 2007

i had an idea and i wanted to run to past you guys. just to see if there was a flaw in my logic that i was missing.

what about blocking the gas tube and turning it into a bolt action rifle? if i did this could i keep the detachable magazine and pistol grip?

That might work too.

The law says, ..."assault weapon" shall also mean any of the following:
(1) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following..."

montana

what a beautiful place. only driven through a few times but man the place is like heaven from what ive seen. i only wish there was a reason good enough to justify moving there to my wife. It seems like one of the last states with some of what the united states used to be like. Here the average house costs 650,000 and the spread between rich and poor seems to only be increasing with time which is interesting in a state as "qrogresive":barf: as this one.

Some how I suspect the California legal AR 15 involves crushing it with a sledge hammer. I like the get the heck out of there idea. Go somewhere like Nevada where you can help vote in a pro gun majority...California is hopelessly lost I fear...:banghead: :cuss: :banghead: Good luck

many of us cant just leave cali. we have family and they wont go.

I know how you feel. My wife told me if I even mentioned California as a place to move to she would divorce me and take my guns! :what: :uhoh: :D

From what I've read, the inhabited areas of the upper plains (Montana, etc.) aren't much cheaper than Cali. There are cities in Montana where average home prices are in the seven figures, with all the people coming in from elsewhere (to stay and to summer).

Configured correctly, you can still have a flashhider if you wish.

Another option not mentioned is the bullet button type of mag releases.

Poke around and ask at calguns since this is a CA specific issue and you'll be set straight, including legal receivers, configurations, FFL's and more.
