Hello all,

I am wondering if there is any type of coating one can use on polymer mags (for the part outside the magwell) to make them stronger. Would epoxy work? Any other ideas? :)

I cringe at the thought of putting epoxy on anything I don't want to look like crap. If you get a good polymer mag, you can drive a car over it and not worry about it. If you want to give it some minor protection, paint it with a rubberized sealant.

I really am at a loss as to wy you think the need to be "stronger" The most popular Polymer mags are Magpul Pmags and they have proven to be more durable than USGI mags.

There are other firearms besides an AR that has polymer mags. Saiga and AKs come to mind. The only plastic mags that would really benefit by being stronger would be Saiga 12 aftermarket mags.

A. have magpul make them
B. make them out of metal.

P mags are the only polymer mags i trust

I think the consensus here is "Buy quality polymer mags in the first place."

Magpuls are very tough.

Bulgarian factory 10 polymers are tough.

Pro-Mags? Don't waste your time. . .

Definately Pmags. I treat mine like crap disassemble them wipe'em down with a damp paper towel and throw em back in the bag no problems yet since I started buying them 2 years ago.

ah, forgot about waffles, they are very good aswell. just DONT confuse them with the commercial "bullet" mags. bullet mags and other commercial poly AK mags are crap

I know the russian saiga polymer mags, at least the saiga 12 mags, are tough as balls. Probably the toughest constructed plastic mag out there so I assume the Saiga rifle mags are equally tough.

Thanks for the replies. I've heard good things about Magpul and pmags but I don't have an AR at the moment. I have a few Surefire mags and I am satisfied with those, but I just wanted to figure out a way to make my Master Molder mags, which are thinner, stronger. All ideas are welcome.

Why?

They're plenty strong as they sit for the use they were designed for.

If you're using your mags as chock blocks, I suggest you use cinder blocks instead.

Yeah, I know it's fine for the most part. It's just a little more peace of mind. I don't care that much about aesthetics, so with that in mind, is there anything i can layer on to the mags?

I just wrap all of my polymer magazines with one roll of electrical tape each. Sure, they no longer fit in the rifle, but they are so much the stronger for what I've done to them. :scrutiny:

:D

That's why I said outside the magwell area!! And not some ghetto electrical tape either

Magpul Polymer mags are just as strong as steel mags and probably more durable.

You could epoxy strips of carbon fiber or fiberglass weaved material to the areas out side of the magwell. That would definitely make them nearly indestructible (well the covered areas at least).

I like your thinking, but carbon fiber would be too expensive and fiberglass material would be hard to fit. And I don't know if the latter would offer any protection to the mag underneath. I'm thinking some kind of liquid coating that dries and can be layered on for uniform strength.

Sounds like quite a bit of work for little reward, use the money you would spend "fortifying" your existing mags towards another mag. Just my opinion.
