I was going to get some spare decapping pins for my dies but not sure if the pins would be the new style headed pin or regular pin, so I tried to remove the expander ball to see before I buy. I thought it is as simple as unscrewing the ball off but it won't come off! I don't want to use a tool to hold the ball or rod and leave tool marks! How do you unscrew the ball? I actually contacted RCBS CS at their website, but they just sent me a new rod with a few pins. The one received is still tough to unscrew! There must be some trick!

They are normally very tight. You may need to use a pair of pliers to grip the pin retainer cap. If you have a piece of leather use it to keep from marking the cap if that bothers you.

No heat, no penetrating oil needed? Is there Locktite in there? I don't know if they Locktite this thing, did not want to use pliers to grip it too hard. There is a YouTube video showing how to do it, he just uses fingers/hands with no tools and it comes apart with a simple twist! I know RCBS may send me another one if I screw up, but I don't want to take advantage on their warranty if something I can do myself.

For many years I used 2 pairs of pliers with a heavy piece of rubber or leather wrapped around both the threaded rod and the expander plug. I recently purchased an inexpensive vise that has hard rubber jaws and now use it to hold the threaded end and use the pliers with a heavy piece of rubber to remove the expander plug. None of my RCBS rifle dies have decapping pins, I have a RCBS Jr. set up with one of the Lee decapping dies to remove all spent primers before I clean and resize the brass.

RCBS does not use threadlocker on the nut. To disassemble I use pliers with emery cloth, the grit side against the parts. You don't have to clamp as hard. When I put one back together, I use purple threadlocker.
