Hey guys, I'm looking at buying a Browning A-bolt Medallion in 7mm rem mag. I was wondering if there was any way to tell just from looking at the rifle, if it has the BOSS system. I asked the gentleman in the gun shop that is selling it and he didn't know. Also, is $475 a good deal for that rifle? It has some nicks an some scratches on the stock, but other than that though it looks and feels real nice. Any input is appreciated. Thanks guys!

The BOSS system is combination muzzle brake and adjustable barrel weight. It is on the end of the barrel, holes around the outside, micrometer type marks on an adjustable ring at the back.

I prefer not to have Boss or to have a conventional recoil boss CR (without the brake). They work, but are quite loud. Great for a range gun, not so great for a hunting gun.

Sounds like a nice gun and a great deal.

First off, that's a decent price on the gun.

Don't get caught up in the Boss thing. I have a Browning A-bolt II Stainless Stalker in .270 with the Boss. I've yet to shoot with the regular Boss, opting instead to use the Boss CR.

As best I can determine, the BOSS serves as a muzzle brake as well as helping tune the harmonics of the barrel for ultra precision. However the BOSS CR (conventional recoil) does not serve as a muzzle brake. The difference in noise, I'm told, is substantial. That's the reason I haven't even messed with the regular BOSS.

Good luck.

The standard BOSS is a tuneable weight which is also ported to act as a muzzle brake, and it is admittedly very loud. The BOSS-CR however is the same tuneable weight without the ports, and IMHO well worth having - the two are interchangeable if the barrel is threaded for the BOSS.

The BOSS or BOSS-CR allows you to tune barrel harmonics to the load you want to use, rather than tuning handloads to suit the harmonics of the barrel. With my .30/06 Stainless Stalker a little bit of tweaking of the BOSS-CR soon had groups down to five rounds in one ragged hole at 100 yards with my preferred load.

I haven't needed to fiddle with it again, and it is still shooting with that same eye-popping accuracy 10 years later.

A friend ordered one with a boss, the gun clover leafed 3 rounds at 100 yards. Oh, that was without zeroing in the boss. He's a dealer and his cost was around $625.00

Was the gentleman an employee? Cause if he is he needs to educate himself on Browning firearms. Are you sure it was a Browning or did he just tell you that?
(just thought id giv my .02)

I just think he thought I was some college kid screwing around so he didn't pay any attention to me (which may determine whether or not I buy from him). I asked him and he didn't even look and just shrugged and said "I have no idea". I know it's a browning. I'm quite capable of identifying one.

yes, if it has this godawful looking metal thing on the end of the barrel with round holes in it....that's a BOSS equipped rifle

Rifle with thing. ;)

Another sure way to tell if it has the BOSS or not.
You can always just shoot it.

If you can still sorta Hear afterward, it doesn't have the BOSS muzzle brake.

If you are Totally Deaf, it does have the BOSS muzzle brake.

I shot my friend's 7MM A-bolt with the BOSS on the end. The first time I did it, I forgot to put my ear plugs back in. I didn't really hear the shot. I just heard a loud ring after pulling the trigger. Never again did I forget to put the ear plugs in....

ROTFLMAO...

That is the truth...they are the loudest brake ever.

I never shot a browning with a boss on, but after reading the accuracy they can be tuned to I would like to try. I feel I would have to see it to belive it. Not that I dont belive the post, I just know all the work I had to get my rem. 700 tuned to a good 5 shot group. It sounds to easy.

Rifles with the BOSS-CR are no louder than any standard rifle. It is only the ported version which is blasty.

Besides which, if you value your hearing you should really be wearing hearing protection.

The only problem I have with the A-Bolts is that they have Made in Japan stamped all over the barrel. :( But they do shoot really well and quite frankly is my favorite production rifle brand.

Anyone ever hunt with the electronic earmuffs with these things? I have one in 30-06 and 1 shot at a coyote told me to never do that again with out protection. It is a great shootin gun, very tight groups.

Sounds like a good deal on a Medallion, but buy a bore light and check the bore and chamber before buying it.

Thanks for the heads up BAT1. I'm definitely going to pull the bolt out and check the bore and chamber. I was also told to check the end of the barrel for nicks and cracks.
