Hello,

I'm writing an essay on the 2nd amendment. I have two other threads on the subject, but I hit into another question that is hard to google.

The question is kind of "soft", and I expect to find an answer here.

It seems as though the right to carry-laws changed dramatically from 1994 up to today. This becomes obvious when looking at the image in the wiki article on the subject.

In my opinion this is a great victory for the pro-gun movement. How did it happen? In 1994 the pro-gun movement had just lost a huge battle against the federal AWB, yet when the sunset date was hit in 2004 the country and the public opinion had changed dramatically.

All input appreciated!

Backlash

Of course the details are more complex, but the answer is as simple as public backlash to the AWB. That came about because of greater TV coverage and theatrics, onset of internet communication, the mistake of domonization of gunowners and the miss step of not realizing the there was a large segment of American society that would identify with us and be offended by such demonization, lack of understanding of American demographics on the part of Anti politicians, disrespect for non urban sensibilities fueling it, ...

Backlash was basically it.

I think the seeds to the modern pro-gun movement (and the CCW movement) could be traced to Kennesaw Georgia. Kennesaw had mandatory gun ownership and some believe that this was a backlash against some towns and cities in Illinois banning handguns. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kennesaw,_Georgia#Gun_law

Some believe that Florida is that start of the modern carry movement. There is some more information below.

You mention 1994 and the AWB, there was a huge backlash over the AWB. There was a huge political fallout over it. Many states started adopting concealed carry laws and it really started to take off.
