Does anyone have any experience with Howa rifles? A local shop has "as-new" .223 heavy-barrel for $350.00+tax. This includes mounts and rings but no scope. I know nothing about the Howa, other than it is made in Japan, by the same company that produces Weatherby. How does the accuracy compare to the Rem. 700? Academy Sporting Goods has the Rem. 700 ADL, standard-barrel for $ 389.00+tax. How do the two rifles compare? How is the parts-availability for Howa? Thanks for your input.

Friend of mine has that very Howa. It seems to be a nice, accurate rifle. The company that makes Howas makes the el-cheapo Weatherby's. I don't think they make the more expensive Weatherby's.

The rifle has a good reputation. IIRC, there was a reason I didn't like it that had to do with the mechanics of the safety. Maybe it was the bolt that wouldn't stay locked if you put the safety on and this let the bolt go up while you carried it? Not certain, but verify that the function of the safety is up to your standards and then buy it. The price is fair, but you can probably find them cheaper. They are much better finished than Savage rifles, and hold the same accuracy potential IMO.
