Howa 1500 Mini @ Cabela's cheap

I bought the mini too, and then came the realization that standard 1500 mags don't fit the mini actions.

I'd be really surprised if Howa was discontinuing the Mini's. They just came out a year ago, the 6.5 Grendels came out a couple months ago and the promised 7.62x39's aren't even out yet.

Just so folks know- Cabelas currently has a 10% off all plus free shipping on firearms and ammo sale going on.

They're great rifles, and that's a great price. The actions are generally smooth and true from the factory, and detachable magazines for them are affordable.

id be all over one if they had a floor plate instead of that ugly clip. NEVER have I had a need for a 10 round clip in a bolt gun

Lloyd, GB has a NIB one for $369 buy now price with a hinged floor plate. Can't tell if it's the mini action though.

Just picked one up, my store had 12 in stock.
$314 after additional 10% off
Nice.

I haven't shot mine yet. Actually I don't have scope rings or any ammo built for it yet. I won't have a chance to play with it for about a month but that price sure put a big smile on my face.

Let us know how it works out.

Howa mini has polymer mag, not sure how durable the polymer mag is if you have to remove the mag every time to load ammo. Does it allow topping off without removing the mag? It is center feed.

Thanks for the heads up, picked one up for $314.99+tax

I'm going to do the milk jug challenge with it. Total with the scope and rings was under $500. Hopefully it will stabilize the 77 grain Nosler.

I put a Cabelas Caliber Specific 223 3-12x scope on it and sighted it in at 100. 3 shots in a nice cluster with a 68 BTHP over 23.8 TAC.

Now to break it in ;)

Moved out to the 36x36" steel target at 500 yards and using the holdover in the scope reticle, made a couple hits. A try on the reduced silhouette next to it and a nice little ring confirmed a hit. My wife took a few shots and had similar success, and now calls it hers

The scope is going back to Cabelas. I really liked the size and magnification but at 500, with it set at 12, the target is blurry. I had to turn it down to 8 in order to get a clear picture. I am going to trade it in for the 4-16x Covenant as I have the 6-24 on another rifle and it works great.

Just picked up scope bases today. Won't get range time till next week :(
Did you read Howa's barrel break in suggestions.
Kinda how I usually do it anyhow.

How is the weight on these howas? I'm thinking of grabbing a standard barrel version for my 10yo. It will be cut down to 16.5" and threaded, so I know that will help shed some weight.

The rifle alone weighs under 6#
You probably CAN'T cut down the hollow synthetic stock. Would be a good restock option.

The mags ARE possible to top off through the rifle, just ran 5rds down from the top. They also single feed nicely by just placing a round on top of the mag.

The Howa barrel looks too thin to thread for 1/2"-28 and the stock is full size. I would look at the compact 16" version of the Ruger American Ranch in 5.56. They can be had for about the same price, weigh nearly the same, and have a compact stock. Mine wasn't a tack driver, around 1.5" at 100, but may fit your needs if that is what you are looking for.

Marshal, there was a specific barrel break in instruction card in the box with mine. May be that's why yours shoots 1.5" groups  or not

I was referring to the Ruger, not the Howa, when I brought up the 1.5" groups.

While I have only shot 10 shots through the Howa, 5 of them for sighting in, it is showing promise. My guess is that with my reloads it will be a consistent .5" gun.
