Hey guys, new member, first post. I just picked up a Howa 1500 .338 win mag today, and started looking around to replace this stock (i believe its a hogue) with something more "tactical", and by that i mean either a raised/adjustable cheek well/pad, something more along the lines of a vertical grip (not a true vertical grip but something with a more vertical grip). I havent been able to find much due to the fact that its a long action rifle, and most stocks out there for howa seem to be for short action. Unfortunately, my budget is fairly tight so im looking for something on a budget. Thanks for any help you can offer guys, will post pics soon.

I have a Howa than can shoot .5" groups in that hogue stock, it's a .308, with a sporter barrel, I'd say keep the stock, but, get some good copper fouling remover, because I love Howa's but they foul BAD.

I'm curious as to why you want a tactical stock on a 338 win mag. I'm normally not a fan of the Hogue stocks, but it may be your best option on this rifle. The Hogue stock is actually used on many tactical rifles. The FN Patrol rifle and Remington SPS Tactical to name 2.

I don't like the Hogues because they are so heavy on a hunting rifle. They run 2.5-3lbs while all of the stocks on my hunting rifles weigh 1-1.5 lbs. On a tactical rifle (or 338 win mag) the extra weight could be an advantage.

I'm not aware of any other tactical type stocks that are made for the Howa. Remember that any stock made for the Weatherby Vanguard will also fit your Howa.

Here is 1 option you may like a bit better than the Hogue. Bell and Carlson are not one of my favorites either, but i think this is an improvement over the Hogue

They foul because they sometimes have a rough bore, as do almost all factory non-lapped barrels, but I have spent way too much time trying to get copper out of that Howa, but it shoots good enough to be worth it.

Here's my Howa 1500 Custom Build .250 Savage with a Krieger 25.5" Barrel

Excuse the pic, but it's the only one i have in this file.

I think you'll like the Howa stock. It feels a lot more rigid than the mattel stocks on many rifles nowdays.

This is a picture of my Howa M-1500 .308 that shoots sub MOA with all hornady ammo I've tried and I'm working up a handload for it with the 168 SMK's.
The Hogue stock is fully floating, in this case, and the rifle has shot sub MOA out to 300 yards, I have no issue with it, aside from not being able to get a good cheek weld.
If you want a tactical stock go with a Bell and Carlson, they are about 200 bucks...
But for a hunting rifle I'd leave it alone.

I also have a 700 SPS Tactical in the Hogue stock that doesn't float.. I will probably replace it eventually.
