I've been looking for an older Remington 572 Fieldmaster in nice shape for a while now. Wanted the 23" barrel, and shotgun type stock not found on the newer BDL model which has a shorter barrel and a real high (too high for me, anyway) monte carlo stock.

I held off for a long time, then I saw this one. It looks to be in excellent shape and that's how the seller described it. I called Remington after I bought it and the date code and serial number make it Oct. of '67.

That's an old Weaver D-4 scope BTW, I figure it's worth about $5. It'll be wearing something else as soon as I get my hands on it.

Anyway, it was a "buy it now" at $199. It was posted for a little over 3 hours when I saw it and it just looked so good, I jumped on it.

I've seen them for a lot less but not in this condition. Did I pay too much or do you think was it a fair deal?

It's a "done deal" as they say. The money order is in the mail so be honest if you think I overpaid. Nothing's gonna change now.

I'm just curious about this. I looked at a ton of "completed auctions" where a lot of these went for considerably less, but I didn't see one this nice.

Thanks.

beautiful Remington 22

I can't imagine finding a better deal and I think you may be surprised about that Weaver scope. Definitely not a 5 dollar scope and is correct for the age of the rifle I think. I hope you enjoy it and you have made me want to start looking for one. I agree wholeheartedly with you- that style of stock looks great!

If you paid $199 and add the shipping you will have $250 or so in the gun. So what? If you go out to eat 4 or 5 times you will have spent that much for food. The food is in the toilet the next day. Ten years from now the money you spent on the rifle won't matter at all. Good find.

funny- my dad has one- or had one... we shot the snot outta it when we used to goto the range when I was just learnin. It resides in my safe now- or did until I pulled it out just a few days back to stoke with cb shorts for a coon that was wanderin round the chicken coop...

we have the deluxe stock and I believe the long barrel...
I like yours too...

I grabbed it outta the closet and took a picture... and heres two quick off hand standing shots at about 65 ft quieter than my airguns and fast follow ups...

Ratshooter,

Couldn't help but note your name. I plan to load the 572 up with CB Longs and send a few rats to rat heaven.

I'm in Florida and the rats love to come around at dusk and dawn and feast on oranges, grapefruit. lemons and limes that have dropped from the trees on our property.

I suppose they wouldn't come around if I picked up every day but I'm a lazy old man. Besides, shooting rats is fun.

I'm gonna retire the air rifle. Even though they are stinkin' rats, I got sick of wounding, but not killing them with the air rifle. Not enough oomph.

I've read the CB Longs are real quiet out of 23" rifle barrels. Anyone hear have expereince with them?

tallpaul, thanks for pulling the rifle and taking those pics. I like the looks of the newer BDL version and if I didn't need a scope and could use iron sights, I would have gotten one of those. But I like to "snuggle up" to my scopes and I thought the high comb on the stock might give me trouble.

Oh yeah, and what were you using today that was quieter than your air rifle?

There's no cause for "buyers remorse" on this at all.
Fantastic gun, in great shape at a very good price!
Enjoy it!:)

Remington cb's ...

this one is from the mid seventies or earlier...
pretty quiet it is... I like those cb's out of alot of .22's I have harvested groundhog out of a garden when I used to live in an apartment complex with a 10/22 single fed with them

if ya had issues with your airgun I do want to point out that there is a whole nuther realm in the airgun world where quiet and power coexist... built in shrouds that quiet the powerful guns to mouse fart levels exist legally...

the game you mention is well within the right air guns realm... air guns are often legal in areas where the real guns will get us into trouble....

another thing is the backstop to the vermin is or should be a consideration. The cb's are heavier and more solid- more prone to damaging/lethal richochett than a pellet in .177 or even .22

Your got a pretty good deal. The old Weaver scopes are very good. I have a Weaver G6, about 8 or 10 buck in 1950. Still clear, has only needed sight adjustment several times in all those years.

Man, she's CLEAN! It might be a tad high, but considering the condition, probably worth it. Brings back memories. Buddy had one. Neat old guns. Yeah, I'd dump the cheezy optics and just shoot it iron sighted, myself. But, a good trophy Bushnell ain't that much. Keep the Weaver, though, for a conversation piece. :D

Mick53 i like your rifle. I looked on GB and think you did very well.

I got the name "Ratshooter" from a man named jack at Ft Worth Gun Supply on 28th st. I told him about all the rats i had been shooting out of the pecan tree at the back of my property and he started calling me "Tom the Ratshooter". I liked the name. Its much better than some of the other names i've been called. LOL.

I used to keep one of my 22s next to the bed loaded with 22cb longs. I had a flashlight and my shorts and slip on shoes laid out ready to put on in a hurry. I had a Chow dog that hated everything. (Two actually) and they would bark different when they had a rat treed. No matter how sound asleep i was i would wake instantly ready for a rat hunt.

I killed over 200 rats out of that pecan tree and a huge fig tree i had. That doesn't count over 200 squirrels, Blue Jays and Grackels that also like to steal pecans.

I liked the cbs longs the best because they will feed through most 22s that are supposed to be 22lr only. They don't cycle the action but you can work the bolt and they do okay. It doesn't work for every gun so you have to experiment with your gun first. They do work in my new Marlin model 60.

Another good point with the cb longs is the case is the same length as a 22lr so they don't foul the chamber like 22 shorts do.

Premium,

I saw a few on GunBroker when I was poing around researching these.

Good luck.

The old remington rimfires are great! Now you just need a Speedmaster 552 to go with it.

What you paid wasn't bad, and if it's what you wanted, big deal- it's only $200.

Oh man, those .22 shotshell pumps are too much fun to be healthy. The old-timer at the range I went to would shoot birds that learners missed on the skeet-range (with .12 gauges) with his pump-action Remington .22 shotshell. (A 572?)

That one is just like mine. Mine is a pre-serial number model. It is my favorite .22, It will shoot anything that I put in it. The colabri(sp) ammo is quieter than a pellet gun. I paid 160 for mine about 5 years ago at a gun show no scope though. They are a great little gun.

any of the remmy 550 552 572, type models in that good shape regularly go for 200 or more, plus as mentioned above, don't quit on that scope, they usually sell on E-scay for 20 bucks or more, and they will be some nice , clear glass.
plus they are light, and don't overpower the rifle with it's size or weight.
Not only that, but it is a bonus they will shoot shorts, real easy, and what else did i find out with mine? It will actually shoot and stailize, without keyholeing,
the Aguila sniper sss rounds, which are 60 grainers, and normally no 22 rifle can
shoot those worth a darn.

Anyone happen to know the rate of twist on this 23" barrel? I've searched high and low on the Internet for the info but come up with nothing.

Even found a manual for the older 572s online and it didn't say!

Well Mick53 i think you started something. I like pumps no matter if they are rifles or shotguns. I like them for the same reasons i like revolvers. They don't rely on cartridge pressure to function.

After seeing the photos of your rifle i thought "I would like one of those". I knew a friend had one so i called to see how he liked shooting it. He said he loved it. I looked on GB and bid on one. It was $290 plus all the shipping. My buddy called back and said he would sell me his. I agreed to buy it. He let me buy the gun for $200.00.

But now i'm stuck with being "High Bidder" on the other gun. Fortunately someone overbid me at the last hour. Whew, dodged a bullet there. I don't need two of the guns.

I went and shot my new 572 today. What a neat little rifle. It shot a little left but i used a laser bore sighter to fix that. My gun looks like yours with the carbine front sight and hardwood stock. Thanks for posting the thread. I may never have looked at this gun if you hadn't.

Ratshooter,

Glad you had a buddy that wanted to sell one plus you were able to wiggle out of the other! How cool was that? You must be livin' right.

I wish mine would get here. (patience, boy, patience).

If you feel like posting a pic or two of yours I'd love to see 'em.

Feel like figuring out the twist rate on that yours? Is it the 23" barrel? I'm told CB Longs out of that barrel are nothing, maybe equal to opening a can of a carbonated beverage.

I have tried to add some photos of my rifle but cannot seem to do it. I measured the twist in my gun 3 different ways last night. I keep coming up with a 1/18 twist.

Most 22lr barrels are a 1/16 twist. This seems to be a compromise twist to ensure that 22 shorts shoot okay also. Most 22 short barrels have a 1/20 twist. Whatever it is it sure does shoot the 36gr Federal rounds well.

If i figure out the photo thing i will post them. Anyway my gun looks just like yours.

Okay it think i did it. OH BOY, OH BOY, OH BOY.

Okay, I never knew this thing existed before this thread, and now I'm salivating over wanting one and wishing the ones on Gunbroker weren't all $400+. That is Just Too Cool.
