HR 6257 - Introduced by Mark Kirk [R-IL]
110th CONGRESS
2d Session

H. R. 6257

To reinstate the Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act.

IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

June 12, 2008

Do you like having God-given rights turned into government-given privileges? I don't.

Will you write/email/phone your congressperson and/or senator about this? I will.

Esp. in Illinois: Rep. Mark Kirk: Phone 202-225-4835 / 847-940-0202

Call your Congresscritter and tell them "No more!"

Would be illegal to own, make, or sell a semi-auto rifle and certain pistols, shotguns or specific models named in the bill.

I'm sick and tired of the misleading names that these proposed laws are given, such as:

"Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act"

Protection??? Right.

So much for transparency in government.

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.

This Act may be cited as the ‘Assault Weapons Ban Reauthorization Act of 2008’.

This was posted last week under teh above quoted title. "Recreational use protection act?" God, I hope we're not as stupid as they think we are.
I see they finally got around to changing things to no longer say 1994. It IS the Clinton ban, but with all the holes sewn up.

And you should know that this bill was introduced and co-sponsored by three Republicans.

I don't know WTH is going on. :scrutiny:

Lets hope the SCOTUS says something good tomorrow on the Heller case but what they have spit out already the past week, (terrorists have access to US courts, child rapers can't executed) I'm really not to hopeful.

Yeah, this is a shock. One of the co-sponsors is from Jersey. Aren't the Republicans in enough trouble this year? WTH is going on???

The thing I could think of that would redeem these three Republicans is they introduced the bill only to withdraw it after SCOTUS rules in our favor tomorrow and then demand the Democrats withdraw HR 1022 as well.

But if the guy is from Jersey, that theory just flew out the window.

Lets hope for a good ruling tomorrow.

Sponsor Mark Kirk of Illinois is from the Tenth District, which is in the northern suburbs of Chicago. There are few places in the country more anti-gun; these are people who fled from Chicago, but still work there, to generalize a bit.
Kirk is no righty, despite having once been supportive of the Iraq initiative, nor would any real conservative be able to get elected in the Tenth. However, the big Dem money is determined to take him out and so has put up Dan Seals, a very hard lefty whose only campaign stance is being anti-Bush. Seals nearly won last time in '06. The 527s are piling even more money and effort this time. My land line gets nasty anti-Kirk (not pro-Seals) voice messages every week from the soft money guys.
Kirk has never been pro-gun, but he stayed mostly quiet on the issue previously. Now, however, he's apparently pre-empting Seals' anti-gun push by introducing this bill.
Interestingly, it seems to be working, at least in the very anti-gun local press. Seals was at a quote loss on the newsradio station and just fell back onto his old hate-Bush bed.
Kirk's mostly being cynical here, but he does spend his days in the company of some very progressive people and one can't really expect much better.
