Firstly, happy Human Rights Day to all of you. :)

Today is a day to celebrate the rights that are inherently bestowed upon us, and to recognize those who have fought for the recognition of those rights.

My question is this: How long before Self-Defense is (widely) viewed as a Human Right? What (in your opinion) has to happen before it will be recognized?

Wes

What I want to know is just _when_ it stopped being a human right. I'm mostly concerned about the US really. I just can't put my finger on the era for some reason. Probably doesn't help that I was born in '80 either.

I didn't mean to insinuate that it isn't a human right -- it IS -- I just wonder what fiery hoops we've got to jump though to get it recognized as a human right.

I feel ya man, I'm an eighties kid, too. '83 for me.

Wes

P.S. I suppose it would only be right to provide a link to www.a-human-right.com , given the occasion.

I think the only way it's going to happen is when the Earth is attacked by aliens. Then after decades of enslavement and our triumphant victory over the alien invaders will self-defense be considered a Human right!
:D

We're going in the opposite direction. It will take something catasrophic before it is recognized otherwise.

Section. 1. Inalienable rights. All men are by Nature free and equal and have certain inalienable rights among which are those of enjoying and defending life and liberty; Acquiring, Possessing and Protecting property and pursuing and obtaining safety and happiness[.]
From the Nevada State Constitution, Article 1, Section 1

But you said "widely" viewed as a human right, correct? Only when each person knows and recognizes the fact listed above, (your state constitution may vary) check them out below.

But doesn't the above quote just ring out with happy happy joy joy? Now, if only the city/county, state and federal government types could read... or the people for that matter or even just the people that matter... or care.

Somebody's got to be the "keeper of the sacred bundle", might as well be us. I hate having to depend on others who think they run things.

Bad thing is, there are a lot of forces out there to prohibit self defense, at the same time making criminals sacred beings. See "Great" Britain, where the defender is the criminal, and the criminal the helpless victim.

Unfortunately, NYC has been like that too many times over the years as well. :(
Once, a long time ago, I had to defend Myself with an edged weapon against multiple attackers. For the first half of the trial I was being treated like I was the one at fault. Thank God I had a great lawyer who cleared it all up.
Years later, I had to again defend Myself against multiple attackers.
This time with mace/pepperspray. Think I stuck around to wait for the cops? No sir-eee! BTW, those examples were attempted muggings against Me. Except the first one, where that was quickly becoming an attempted murder starting as a mugging.
I think the worst case was the "Bernie Goetz" incident.
Oh Bernie Goetz, why did you turn yourself in?

Never officially happen.

Self defense implies an ability to conveniently defend one's self of loved ones. That same capability can be employed should government (you pick which level) get a little to porky.

There are strong pressures being applied to remove or deny the right to self defense. I use the UK, Canada, and Australia as examples. What those countries are doing defies logic yet when confronted with he consequences of their policies the response is to make the laws even more draconian.
