I have the firearms that will get me through survival and defence situations, but my concern is the laws regulating ammunition in the near future. So I'm thinking about stocking up, and I mean STOCKING UP on the ammo needed for my firearms.

Question: By stocking up with HUGE quantities for extreme lengths of time, is there a need to keep it in a temperature controlled setting? What are the proper conditions one should store ammo in for lengthy periods of time? Cool? Low light / No light? Rotate boxes from top to bottom / bottom to top? Help guys!!!

I've always read ammunition should be kept at a constant moderate temperature and dry. That saidâ„¢, I found some .357s I'd loaded thirty years ago in a box when I went through the garage. They've been hot, cold, dry, muggy, and all parts between. They worked just fine.

For long term storage........underground is the best.

No need to worry over kids, theft,or fire and it can be a very stable as far as temperature is concened.

I doubt your "HUGE quantities" will come close to what some members here keep around for general plinking purposes. ;)
I don't even try (don't believe in SHTF situations) and I think I have at least 10K rounds lying around, not counting the rimfire...

If you are really serious, then I would suggest that you take up reloading. Not only is it considerable cheaper, but most of your components will be easier to store compactly.

Burying your supplies in 5-gallon plastic buckets which are gasket-sealed and containing either dessicant packs, or better yet -filled with inert nitrogen gas will probably make ammo last till long after you are gone. Oh yeah, keep your powder cool.

btw-humidors are meant to keep moisture in not out.

Hey CWL ... Tone it down! (as was stated to another member in here in another thread). I never made any comparison of my HUGE SUPPLY to the other members in here for their plinking purposes. ;)

Having said that, thanks for the other advice you offered.

Humidors are meant for keeping a STABLE humidity. Using a 50/50 PG water mixture will produce 70% RH. If you live in FL then this may be lower than ambient, if you live in AZ, it will be higher.

However, for ammo storage, I use Ammo cans. The 50- cal. are convenient, but I also have a large one for some kind of grenades or something. You can get all sizes pretty cheap at army surplus stores.

I'm sure the temp. inside your house is stable enough for ammo.

Khornet........Kwai!

My Mother and her family were from Massachusets. And yes they are Abenaki, and so am I.

I was born and raised in California........It used to be a nice place.
So, to answer your question. No I am not from that area.
But I sure would love to see the maple trees in the fall.

Underground OK...

Storing ammo underground is OK, unless you live somewhere that the ground freezes into concrete during the winter. Yah, I know, you would only 'barely cover' the top of your storage containment unit. That first six inches of 'frozen concrete' will cause you all sorts of problems.

On the other hand. IF you do live in an area with real winters, and have a basement, cutting out a small section of the basement wall, digging back behind that and then putting in a faux concrete cover back over it that could be shattered with a hammer in emergencies works pretty good.

NOT that I would know ANYTHING about his kind of stuff.
