Just a few more days and I'll take my hunters ed class. I'll be on my may in no time. Any tips about what instructors focus on? I'mnottooworried. My rifle handling skills are sound and most of facts are straight. Just thought I'd let ya know in case anyone had a few words.

There's nothing to worry about. Hunter safety is about paying very close attention to where your muzzle is, what is behind what you shoot at and identifying what you're shooting at. Not necessarily in that order.
The thing to remember is that it's a course just like any other course. If you have any questions, ask them. There's no such thing as a stupid question there either.

I had to take the swedish jägar examen when i moved here to sweden. The course started in the September and finished the following may. Three hours lessons every week and two writen exams, shot gun handling and safety, clay shooting and shooting at the running hare target. Rifle handling and safety. precision shooting and shooting the runnig moose target. I had one other small problem in that i did not speak Swedish very well. But can read it well. Must say i enjoyed taking the course even if it was a bit long winded. It was made a bit easier as i have been hunting for 40 years so i know a little about it but i still came away having learnt a lot.

You will probably be surprised at how basic the hunter safety course will be. We have to make sure anyone who wants to hunt can, so the material is at about a 3rd grade level. Your manual will be full of information, however, and online resources can fill in the blanks. Materials published by your fish and game division may also be helpful, but there's no substitute for a live coach or mentor.

I would love to see advanced courses available, but much of what one is required to go through in Germany and Scandinavian countries may be aimed at washing out all but the most highly motivated. It would be great to have higher standards, but not if it meant kids were more attracted by video games and more available (if more passive) entertainment.

A good trend in our courses is a video simulator which engages kids better in our high-tech era. I wish we had more time to connect with these young-uns, but it's a precious commodity these days even at the tender age of 11.

I went on tour w/ a jazz band thru sweeden years ago.

I heard they cover survival skills too. Thats neat that the cover that kind of stuff. I went thru some pretty serious lifeguard training years ago so this right up my alley. I didn't really want to be a life guard but it was basically a water and boat survival course. I read alot of Chuck Hawk type articles about wilderness survival and of course hunting tips online every day. Good info. Anyhow, these are the first steps on new territory for me. I feel cautious and willing. I grew up in a hunting family but my folks lived in the city. I never got much into rifles. Mostly bows or slingshots and lots of fishing up in the north woods so I'm coming at this late but able. It's a hoop here in Washington but a good one I think. Likew you said its about making sure the basics are sound. Wish me luck!
