What commercial .30-06 hunting ammo is available for the M1? I'm looking for something to shoot white tails with. Something with a soft point bullet and powder that's not gonna bend my op rod. Anybody have any experience with this? I have a 5 round en-bloc clip but never got around to taking the thing out into the field.

I used Remington 150 grain Core-Lokt .30-06 ammo in my Garand when I hunted with it once several years ago.

I shot enough to sight it in and miss a doe in the woods. The Garand came back in good shape.

If you're already sighted in with GI-type ammo, it shouldn't take more than three or four shots to get righteous with commercial stuff.

Hunting Bambi is gonna take, what one to three shots?

You wouldn't be shooting enough "hot" ammo through it to hurt anything. It's prolonged shooting that bends the op-rod.

150-grain something-or-other oughta work just fine...

Good news. Thanks for the help guys.

If you are a handloader, just pull the fmj bullets from M2 ball, resize the necks and seat a 150 grain softpoint of your choice.

Some folks seem to like it ok but I've used Remington CoreLokt exclusively for ten years of hunting deer and hogs. Several calibers: .35 Remingon, .300 Winchester Magnum, .35 Whelen, .308 Winchester. I have never recovered an intact bullet. In every case where I recovered the bullet; the jacket had separated from the core. The Remington CoreLokt .35 Whelen 220 grain bullet failed to exit a 250 lb boar...twice...at 75 yards. I hit him on his right shoulder and he made a U turn around a pine tree. When he came out from behind the pine tree, I hit him on his left shoulder. Now, don't get me wrong, after the second shot he was DRT. But both of those bullets were stopped by the gristle plate after traversing the chest cavity and both were in pieces.

Also, if you ever begin to use a .300 Win Mag...don't ever use a 150 grain CoreLokt on anything you want to eat. They don't come apart...they blow up. Deer I shot with one looked like a hand grenade had exploded in him. There was exactly one intact organ in his body-the bladder. The rest was almost pureed. It was one heck of a mess.

PS. This probably wouldn't happen to the 150 grain CoreLokt in .30-'06 with the lower velocity. I think the jacket will still separate, though. I've killed plenty of game with the CoreLokt. I've just become dissatisfied with the terminal ballistics of the bullet.

Any 150-180 grain hunting bullet your rifle will shoot well, will do. No Hornady 'Light Magnums' though.

Be aware that the gas system in the M1 Garand was designed to operate safely in a narrow window of port pressures. If you use a powder that's slower than the USGI specs, then the port pressures can be high enough to bend or break the op-rod.

Since the M1 is a very robust rifle, your Garand may be able to go through a few commercial loadings without any damage...or it may snap the op-rod on the first shot. Personally, I don't take the risk.

For that reason, I only use my own handloads when hunting the with the M1. IMR 4064 or 4895 are the optimal powders to duplicate the loadings of M2 ball ammo. M2 ball was the ammo issued for the M1 Garand.

However, Winchester has stated that their 150gr PSP is loaded with powder that matches the speed of IMR4895, so it should be safe for use in the M1.

Wednesday I picked up a couple of boxes (I always buy more ammo then I need) of Winchester 150 grain Super-X Power Points. Do to Byron Quick's review of the CoreLokt bullet and the fact that the Winchesters were on sale, I choose them over the Remingtons.

Friday morning I took the old girl out to the range and made sure she was sighted in on some Danish Milsurp. The Winchester ammo fell right into place with just a few shots.

Opening day in Michigan is next Monday. I’m pretty excited about the prospect of taking the M1 out into the field. Thanks again for the help.
