A buddy of mine is taking me out as a guest next Sunday on his lease. There is a really, really nice 9pt on the property and he said if I get a good shot, to take it.

I'm just wondering what the thoughts are about being a guest and taking what ultimately could be the best deer that the property sees this year.

Would you take the shoot if it was presented to you or pass because you're a guest and would feel bad taking it?

Thanks
Adam

If he's a "horn hunter" then leave it for him. Can't eat horns anyway. If he doesn't care, take whatever shot you get.

He said you could, and therefore, it would be rude to reject his hospitality. Sort of like if you cooked him dinner and he said, "it looks too good, I'll just sit and watch you eat." Ask again to make sure it's ok, and if he says yes, and you get the shot, take it. Good luck!

If he didn't want you to take it he either wouldn't have invited you or wouldn't have told you about it. He probably already has one that good or better. If you see it, shoot it.

Or he might have said something along the lines of, "I'm after this great 9 pt." That's code for, "please don't shoot him" :)

If he told you to take the shot, take it.

Your buddy said if you get a good shot to take it. Nuttin' else needs to be said. But make sure it's a good shot presentation and make sure you do your part. Maiming and losing the best deer on the property is not a good way to get invited back. Does your buddy share this lease with anyone else? If he does, you might want to get their approval also.

You're a guest, but you're the specific guest of your friend, not of all of the lease holders. It's up to your host to know if taking any of the larger bucks is permitted by guests or not. Otherwise you are saying, "Thanks but I don't trust you..., can you get me in touch with the other members so I can get their permission too?"

I would take the deer that comes to you. I would not pass up on a fat doe, when they are allowed for harvesting, in case the trophy might come by later, only to have the sun go down and never see him and have no venison. If the big one comes by first, then I'd take it.

Had a friend take me out to his lease. My first question to him was "horns or meat"? He said meat. At day break there was at least 15 does standind at the feeder. Picked the biggest and shot. Waited a bit, then went to collect my harvest. Got there to find that 2 does were down. Probably could have shot a nice buck if I would have bided my time, but meat is was he wanted and meat is what I took. Best thing is to ask him outright what he expects you to shoot? You are, after all, his guest.

There will always be another big deer the next year..and the year after that.

Take the shot, make your buddy proud. You will all have smiles in the end.

Also, when the rut hits...there will be deer chasing doe's all over the place. You may very well see a monster from another area.

Take it. I had two guys visiting last week for roe deer hunting. They hunted on my license, so the meat was mine. But they were told to shoot any deer, except mothers with their young. And if they did shoot a big one, I would be happy for them. If you don't wanna share, don't bring guests.

As suggested, there may be that "MONSTER" deer thast would come in later and this nine pointer`d be trying to run it off. He may have missed the monster because of the little niner.
If He would be standing there with You and that niner would appear, "Well, There He is, You want Me to take it???" and then You would know for certain that it is a go.
If He would`nt happen to be with You when it appears, question Him about it before seperating ways.
I have take people out to the step dads ranch and if a big one would appear I always tell the "TAKE IT", it is all in the comraderie and fun of the hunt.
