Hi All,

I am new to hunting in VA, and need to find some hunting buddies specifically for the Hampton Roads areas. I am finding that leagal hunting grounds are not easy to come by. I would really would like to find some people that could show me the ropes around here.
For the time being, I only have the ability to shotgun, and rifle hunt. I would be willing to purchase a muzzleloading setup if need be.
I have found that hunters are a family like community, and a couple of people have already taken me in. Hopefully, I will be able to return the warmth and kindness when I become a well established hunter in the area.

Ryan

Try driving out to King and Queen County and just drive the woods around King and Queen Courthouse (on VA 14). There are plenty of hunt clubs around there, and you can find their signs and telephone numbers all around.

Another nice place is the Chicahominy WMA on VA 5 west of Williamsburg.

Subscribe to the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries magazine (I forget the name, but when you get your license, they'll contact you.) They offer a book that lists all the WMAs and has topographic maps, to boot.

Chickahominy would probably be your best bet if your not looking to join a hunt club. I know the group of people that organize hunt the area w/dogs during general firearms season (if you can't beat 'em, join 'em). I'd rather still hunt.

I'd offer to meet you, and possibly get you into Laf-A-Lot Hunt Club, but even our waiting list is full!!!

Thanks.... I will have to look into Chickahominy. I was reading into many of the rules about hunting in the local WMA's but it seems you have to enter into lottery's far in advance in order to hunt on certain dates et cetera...

I am already too late into the game to enter into most of those lottery hunts. I found one bear lottery I can still enter into, but that was it.

Any public lands, as a rule, you'll want to try to scout ahead of time and then when you do go to hunt, get there early.

Think of what time you think the first guy might try to get there to head out to his stand, then get there an hour earlier.

Hunting public lands can work, but with Hampton Roads being so urban (in a sense relative to hunting land) you're likely going to have to drive some to get to any decent lands.

As others have mentioned, most folks that hunt close to home in HR are in a club...

Chickahominy WMA is one of those places where a climbing tree stand is a great asset. I liked to go in dragging a patch soaked in deer lure, and sit in my stand and rattle and grunt.

I have a climbing tree stand. I'll probably scout/ squirrel or turkey hunt until shotgun season, and then take my climbing tree stand out there.

I have 1 friend who is in a hunt club up in cumberland county... going up there this weekend.

i was wondering as I had a buck and 4 does in my front yard about 2:30am this morning.

Kind of a drive but...

I have land over on the Eastern Shore of Va. If ya feel like drivin across the CBBT one day I might be able to squeeze ya in. Preferably a fri. or sat. afternoon. Not much to offer but hey, if you have no luck elsewhere...

Ft Eustis has hunting available as well. I haven't tried it, but I hear is decent. Of course they're going to charge you about what it cost to get your va license's (all of them ir you bow and muzzleload

Got in pretty good with a guy I work with. He belongs to a real nice hunt club up in Cumberland, VA. I have killed 3 deer so far (I got really lucky).

Will be leaving work early today.....

I guess they're all doe? Just kidding. Time has been the most valuable commodity in my household. I went the first day of muzzleloader, missed a doe. Hopefully I can get in the woods this weekend.

Congrats of finding a place, and your harvest thus far.

Good luck to all for the remainder of the season.

Second on Ft. Eustis. $30 in addition to your Va hunting and big game permit, plus you must have a Hunter Safety card on your person, then register your firearm on post and toughest requirement, you must have a safety harness for sitting on the stand...hard to find! But I hear from the hunter check station on post that the season as been very productive, for muzzleloading, bow, and now slugs!

I recently bought an AR-15 and am looking to hunt some varmints (coyote, ground hog, etc.) Does anyone know a decent place to go in the Hampton Roads area? I know that I will have to drive some, but would prefer not to drive several hours. If anyone knows someone that would allow me to hunt on their private property that would be preferred (I need some new friends anyway). Thanks for your help.

try looking up danny hugely or bob garland in the williamsburg area. these two hunt a lot and could help you out, also look in the norge and toano areas. outside williamsburg or lanexa area.. good luck and happy hoho
