Just found out I'm going to Ghana (West Africa) in about 2 months. I'll be there for a couple of weeks and it just hit me last night...why couldn't I stay there for a few extra days and hunt?

Problems are: I can't find any info on hunting in Ghana, everything seems to be either south or east. And no idea what seasons are. I'm coming up short on the net. Any help?

Ghana isn't really a "hunting" destination for folks headed to Africa . . . in fact, I don't believe I've ever run into someone who hunted there. Doubt that there's much in the way of professional hunters working there.

You might try contacting Safari Club International to see if they know anything, or perhaps the Ghana embassy/consulate.

If they don't have a real safari industry, importing firearms may be a problem . . . and two months is a mighty short time frame to put something together.

thanks...I've done some more looking around and it doesn't look like it's going to be an option. I just can't find any info, which leads me to believe that there probably isn't any info.

It was a good thought...:(

Ghana just opened up to hunting this year.

I got an E-mail on it some time ago.

The hunting is very limited and the conditions are tropical jungle and rain forest. The hunting should be very dificult in very challenging conditions.

But there is a budding hunting industry in the country and the prices were very reasonable from what I could remember.

If my memory serves me right I think the main species were dwarf forest bufalo, diker, and possiby bongo or dwarf forest elephant.

Also something to consider.

There is hunting in surounding countries of Cameroon, C.A.R., Burkino faso, Senegal and your only a hop skip and a jump from, Namibia or Tanzania.

Just a thought.

I have never hunted in Africa, nor been there, nor played an African hunter on TV. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

I would not rule out hunting in Ghana yet. While the popular big game of Southern Africa may not be in abundance, it does have its share. Considering that it is a less popular hunting safari destination, it may not need a reservation as far in advance and prices seem to be slightly less from the link listed below. Also, even if big game is not an option due to time/availability/cost, you might consider smaller game or birds. The whole continent has hundreds of species you won't find in North America. A few mounted African fowl would be a great prize to bring home (or have sent home later).

A quick search on the internet revealed a good web site with information on hunting in Western Africa.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
