My parents are thinking about taking me to Alaska for a couple weeks to go fishing next summer (we've been talking about it for years) for my college graduation. We're also interrested in finding a trip where we could hunt as well as fish.
I know next to nothing about hunting in Alaska, so I was wondering if someone could tell me some of the game animals in Alaska that can be killed with a .270 (my rifle) and if they can be hunted during the summer. Also, if anyone knows of a good hunting/fishing outfitter that'd be great.

A .270 would be fine for caribou or sheep/goat. Moose as well, tho I'd personally want something in 30-'06 or up. Caribou (and moose, I think) can be hunted relatively cheaply, as you don't need a guide and the cost of airfare (several hundred) can get any number of flight services to drop you off somewhere to hunt once you're in Alaska. (Getting dropped of somewhere productive can be another matter entirely, IME). Sheep or goat are many thousands of $$, let's say 8-10K+ in round numbers, and can be taken only on guided hunts for non-residents. Re season, that's pretty much a fall thing, tho that can be as early as sometime in August for some stuff. I don't know the seasons anymore and they vary by GMU, but the Ak. Dept of Fish and Game's website will get you that:

Moose as a non resident will cost you $400 for the tag, to get to productive moose area and hunt it will cost ya about 2K all together..

Caribou drop off...about $1500...you want a guide...double it at least....

Hunting starts end of August....I generally dont go out till middle of september, give the bugs a chance to die and let it cool off...nothing sucks more than having to skin out a caribou in 75 degree heat with swarms of bugs crawlin over ya..and by swarms I mean if ya dont cover yerself in bog dope and wear a head net yer dead

270 rifle is fine....

Frickin attrocious........As far as the bugs in mid June go..

The cost of getting out to a good moose or bou area all depends on where you start from. If it's from Los Anchorage then yes it's expensive. Quite a bit cheaper if you're starting out from Nome or Kotzebue...

Where are you guys going fishing?

the squeeters are about killing me now and its the beginning of June.

As for a cost effective hunt, I dont care how cheap it is I will not fly out of anchorage for a bou hunt. I'll spend a few extra bucks and fly out from somewhere else IMO. If you think about what all is involved, you will understand. Some people have good luck flying out of here but its not the norm.

H&H hunter: we're planning on going for halibut and salmon mostly. I'm trying to start fly fishing this summer, so maybe we'll do a little of that too. Right now it's all way up in the air and nothing's certain. All of the info we have is from 3 years ago when we looked into doing it for my high school graduation
