I just read this on the Ohio hunting website;

http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/wildlife/Hunting/huntregs/carryconcealed_p21.htm

Carry Concealed Weapons

Attention hunters who possess a concealed handgun carry permit.
The concealed handgun permit DOES NOT allow you to carry a handgun concealed while engaged in hunting if there is a wildlife regulation restricting the use of a gun or carrying a gun concealed while hunting.

Restrictions include:

• Hunters cannot carry a firearm while training or working dogs for furbearers during the closed season.

• Hunters cannot carry more than one firearm while hunting deer.

• Hunters cannot carry a handgun concealed while hunting deer.

• A hunter cannot possess a firearm while aiding or assisting another hunter hunting deer or turkey if they have harvested their deer or turkey.

• Hunters cannot carry a handgun while hunting deer during the special area muzzleloader season, the statewide muzzleloader season, or archery season.

• Hunters cannot carry a firearm while hunting during the deer archery season. If you are carrying a concealed handgun and are stopped by a wildlife officer, announce to the officer that you are a concealed handgun license holder and are carrying your handgun.

Though I have heard other states restrict you from carrying firearms during archery season, I dont agree with the other regs posted above. I'm heading home the week before Christmas to Lorain and was planning on getting some hunting in with my brother if anything is open.

That one cracks me up.

IANAL, and all that, but I don't believe that ODNR can issue rules like that....

I'm not a hunter, but the way I read the full text of the stuff they passed around back in May, I can't carry in the sixth of an acre that's "woods" in my backyard during a hunting season. Property that I own....

Unfortunately, we've got too much other more critical stuff on the plate right now - vehicular carry and CPZ's....

BTW, if you're coming to OH, you can't carry in any Turnpike Service Plazas or any "Roadside Rest" areas on other highways.

When questioned, ODNR told us that they'd always had rules against Concealed Carry, but now that more citizens are lawfully carrying.... :fire:

(Note that I don't object to hunting. I just don't do it.)

Geez, looks like I got alot of reading to do before I break the Ohio state line. :banghead:

Yup....

Head over to OhioCCW.Org and wander around. There's a link to the OH AG's site there too.

Or, Packing.Org has a bunch of appropriate links too.

Short list: IANAL and all that.... (Assuming you have a Concealed Carry license that's honored in OH, otherwise it's locked in the trunk and empty!)

No carry where liquor is served. (Careful of this 'cause you can't always tell if a restaurant is selling liquor and they don't have to post a sign.) (Carry out sales - like a gas station that sells beer - is OK if not posted.)

No carry on State or Federal property. (Usually posted.)

No carry on any school property except you can lock it in the glovebox on University property. (Other schools you'd best leave it at home. Empty in the trunk should be OK, but do that before you enter the school property.)

No carry where posted. There are no rules as to the signage, but it does have to be visible. You could put "NO GUNS" on a 3x5 card in the front window and be legal. It is also legal to post a property. IOW, put the sign at the driveway entrance and the whole area is off limits. You can't even leave the gun in your glovebox. I have no idea if unloading it and locking it in the trunk would be legal, but it should be. OFCC has a nice list of places to avoid, but it's not complete.

Vehicular carry is the other mess. Be sure to read it. Short form:

To carry in a vehicle you must: :cuss:

1. Carry on your person in a holster in plain sight.

2. In a locked case that's in plain sight. A "Steal Me" box....

3. Locked in the glovebox if the vehicle has one.

Your weapon can be loaded in all three of the above modes, but "Plain Sight" is undefined! "On Your Person" is also undefined, but seems only to preclude sticking the gun (with or without a holster) into the seat belt.

I heard that one LEO has indicated that he would cite somebody for wearing an IWB because the whole gun wasn't in plain sight. Probably would get laughed out of court, but....

Meantime, open carry is illegal in some areas (although technically legal in OH where not posted), and good luck on knowing where that may be while you're driving through and carrying openly 'cause it's required by law.

Finally, if you are stopped, TOUCHING your weapon is a Felony....

Turn on your dome light, place your hands on the steering wheel or dashboard, and immediately inform the officer that you're carrying and where the weapon is. Then, with his cooperation, carefully produce your driver's license and Concealed Carry paperwork.

Or stay out of OH.... But if you're coming for commercial reasons, it might be nice to have your employer write a nice letter to the Governor as to why you're not coming, or will be looking for alternatives....

(The good news is that except for OSP and some major cities, most LEO's won't give you much of a problem. The bad news is that OSP is responsible for most of the Poison Pill stuff I listed above.) :fire:

Roger that. I have been pretty much up to speed on most of the laws. Gotta read the fine print though.

I am gonna visit my brother in Lorain for a week. Got an Arizona and Florida permit now. Heck, I might even apply for one when Im in Ohio just to have a bona fida Ohio permit.

Gonna be wearing a belt holster instead of the IWB since the weather is a bit colder up there and I will most likely be wearing a jacket.

I dont see much for hunting open there. Gonna bring the shottie just in case I can get some time in a duck blind. Been a while though.

"No Guns" signs

Can someone tell me what a person would be charged with (in Ohio) for carrying in a prohibited place, a convenience store with a "No Guns" sign on the door for example? I understand that in some states there is no crime committed if you are asked to leave and do so. Is it a crime to enter the store? What would the penalty be? Would your CHL be revoked?

Yes Keoni

I live in Ohio, and have a CCW ...The way I understand it, in Ohio, the minute you step into an establishment that is posted, you have committed a crime. I know some states you are okay until/unless someone asks you to leave the premises, but if a property is posted here and you carry, you are already behind the 8-ball.

Edited to add...From my reading it is a misemeanor (similar to trespassing), however, I also think it would be likely that you would lose your CCW license in the bargain.

Bummer to hear about DNR having those types of laws on the books.

However, they may be hope. ODFW had similar laws on the books, but were overturned earlier this year. Don't know if they had laws against CCW period, but they did have the law about not having a firearm during archery season. Hopefully the Ohio laws will be changed soon.
