Hunting Info for Arizona?

I am sick of the dark and dreary Pacific Northwest.

I know we have great hunting opportunities here in the PNW, but damn the 9 months of rain and darkness really start to drag a guy down.

I have decided that in 2-1/2 years I'll be relocating to the Tucson area, and would like to find out what and where I can both shoot and hunt.

Ok where do we start.

Bird hunting. Doves are everywhere. Quail are abundant. Turkey are available in the Northeast portion of the state.

Deer. All over. Tucson area is wide open. From Tucson south to the border is some good rifle hunting for Deer and Javelina. Need good binoc's, rifle and off road vehicle. Alot of glassing and walking involved down there.

Elk and Mullies are mostly up in the Northeast portion of the state. Also Elk are up in the White Mountains also but most of it is Indian Reservation. You will pay extra to hunt there.

Shooting, Being that Tucson is out in the middle of no where you can go out in the desert and let em fly. But you must be aware of course of whats beyond. I usually go out down Craycroft just south of the State Pen and County Jail to shoot. Wide open out there and no one to bother you.

If you want indoor ranges then Jensons or the Marksman have indoor ranges.

Outdoor off 84 heading towards Kitt Peak is a huge outdoor range. Its about a 20 minute ride outside of Tucson. Nice place with plenty of different range options.

You have to be drawn to hunt most big game.I've gotten 1 elk tag in 10 years and 3 deer tags.You can improve your odds abit but I always put in for areas that are close to Phx or have good chances of bagging an animal. I have gotten Javilina every year that I've hunted except 1 and that was my fault, I missed the shot. I wish I could find some quail around Phx,the drought has been really tough on them.I rifle and handgun hunt not to sure about bow and black powder hunts.

Tucson

Quail are everywhere here. Just find a wash and start hiking. Filled 2 out of three of our Javelina tags last weekend. Have scared up white tailed deer, seen bighorn sheep, hunted dove, whitetail rabbit, coyote, and more. There is so much wild life here, and good weather year round. Would highly recommend it!

we're hoping to fill three javelina tags this coming weekend at Roosevelt Lake. i scouted a couple weeks ago, should be no problem getting mine. i'm using a Savage 99 in .250-3000 Savage.

hopefully Tucson is not suffering the same plague as Phoenix. the rapid suburban growth has brought with it a plague of recreational dirtbikers and quad riders that are scaring off the game.

nothing against hunters who use quads. my dad uses one, he can't walk like he used to. hunters aren't zooming around kicking up huge clouds of dust and making a lot of noise.
