....I have gun hunted big and small game in the Catskills and up state NY for decades and it is time to retire. My wife likes Mertle Beach SC.

What gun hunting opportunites can be had in this area? Qual? White tail, Turkey? Hog? I assume I will need to travel west 1 or 2 hours from Mertle for this but I'm basically clueless at this point.

Thx....

Yes, yes, yes, yes. Coyote, raccoon, squirrel, bear (much further west), etc (I don't do birds myself). I do a lot of hunting in the middle of the state (clarendon county), which is about 1.5 hours from Myrtle. There is plenty of good hunting within a couple hours from myrtle, including more hunt clubs than you can shake a stick at if you want to pay to join.

If you wanted to get a license for North Carolina, the eastern part of the state has a lot of similar game to offer. I was stationed in the southern outer banks for 3 years and the deer and hogs were aplenty, with some smaller black bear here and there.

I don't know much about ranges up in that area, but land down here is still relatively cheap.

Raj,
I have hunted Kingstree SC a number of times with great success and more deer than you can shake a stick at. There are swamps and good fields there also for all different types of bird hunting. My best friend owns a couple thousand acres there however you can buy acreage for less than $1k an acre for good hunting land.

Yeah, a good bit of everything. In the middle of the state the deer season runs from August 15 to Jan 1 straight through with rifle, bow, or whatever. Pretty decent deer season.

I live in New Jersey now but was raised in South Carolina. I still do most of my hunting near Georgetown, which is about 45 minutes from Myrtle Beach. There are a lot of deer, turkeys and hogs. Deer rifle season is from Sept. 1 to Jan.1. During January through March is the best time for hogs and turkey season opens March 15.
This year, South Carolina allows night hunting for hogs, so there still might be something to do during June, July and August, but I haven't tried the hog hunting at night yet.
